Tiger Town

The TV Guide

Yesterday was another fun-filled day here in Detroit Rock City … even if the weather started to get a little stank midway thru the day. My friends and I started our day in Royal Oak, MI where we lunched and shopped before making our way downtown to cheer on the Detroit Tigers as they faced off against the Cleveland Indians. While the weather was nice and warm in the day, it got much colder, windier and wetter as evening fell. We kinda froze our buns off at the game but we had a lot fun … even if the Tigers lost a little bit :) More »

Watch: A ‘Banned’ Guinness Commercial From 1995, Featuring A Same-Sex Couple, Finds New Life In 2013

I'll Drink to That
Stand By Your Man

Back in 1995, Guinness produced a television commercial that featured a same-sex male couple in a loving (if somewhat messy) relationship. At the time, the company decided that the image of a male couple in an ad campaign was not suitable for airing on TV (largely due to the British tabloid press that deemed the ad “controversial and wrong”). Late last year, the commercial found its way to the Internets and it’s been making the rounds ever since. I am in love with this commercial … which I find clever, cute and extremely progressive … especially for the time in which it was produced. Guinness has long been one of my favorite beers so I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to see that a company that I love to support has been a long supporter of gay rights. Even tho the commercial was never officially released, it’s clear the company intent was to showcase same-sex love in a very positive light AND associate that love with the Guinness brand. Amazing. My Goodness, indeed.

A Queens Elementary School Becomes America’s First All-Vegetarian Public School

That-Ish-Cray/Kind Of Awesome Of The Day

So, this is pretty awesome. We all know that healthy eating and living in America is, like, this huge thing. There’s a lot of conflicting information out there and it’s not always easy to determine what’s healthy or not (for example, I’ve been hearing that soy milk is, maybe, not that good for you… what???!!!) but many experts seem to agree that getting people to change their relationship with food is extremely difficult. If you’ve been eating a certain way your whole life– and if you were raised to eat that way– when you’re an adult it becomes that much harder to change those habits that were instilled in you for 20+ years. As with most things, it’s best to learn while you’re young and a school in Queens, New York is trying to teach their young students what healthy eating can look like (and how delicious it can be). YDKJ

The TV Guide

Yesterday was a very nice, very quiet day for me … which went absolutely according to plan. Because of all the running around I’ve been doing in the past week and because I’ll be torturing myself by running the LA Marathon this coming Sunday, I’ve decided that this week is going to be a very relaxed week for me. The most exciting thing I got up to yesterday was playing video games on the couch. Yes, folks, it was a rabble-rousing Tuesday around the old homestead :D More »

Beef & Books

The TV Guide

After my quick and sorta bizzy weekend in Detroit, I decided that my first day back was going to be really chill. In fact, I’m hoping to make the rest of the week a really quiet one. I’ve been running around a lot lately and, dang it, I just want to do nothing for a few days. With the season 3 premiere of Game of Thrones looming, I’m trying to read as quickly as possible the novel A Storm of Swords in order to get a handle on what’s to come in GoT season 3 before the show airs. I managed to do a lot of reading last night but I did take a break to run out for some Arby’s. What? Don’t judge me. It was a pretty perfect Monday night. More »

Run This Town

The TV Guide

Last night Sarah, Mark and I finally managed to get out of the house and hit the town … tho, for a second night in a row, it almost didn’t happen. A lazy afternoon turned into a lazy evening and, well, you know how that goes. We managed to rally for a later dinner at Sean O’Callahan’s in Plymouth, MI for a pre-race meal. Today is the 31st annual Cork Town Race 5K and the three of us, plus Agnes and VLB, will be running the race. It’s a bit chilly here in Detroit today but hopefully that won’t be a problem. More »
