It's all about Juneteenth
Oh, the 4th of July—you tricky, tricky holiday. I’ve said plenty of times before that growing up with parents who are also historians and professors of African and African-American history makes for an interesting experience. My mother, for example, was obsessed with the 4th of July fireworks and I have great memories of driving down to the Charles River (excuse me, Chaaahles Rivah) to watch them with her. And, at the same time, it was always made clear to me that this was not an Independence Day for black Americans, who were still enslaved at the time—even by some of the very writers and editors of the Declaration of Independence. So yes, yes, yesss to this statement Usher made over the weekend at the Essence Festival! Click inside for more!

Yesterday I shared video of Kanye West performing a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen during his headline performance at The Glastonbury Festival Saturday night. Today I’d like to share video of singer/songwriter Ryan Adams performing his song Stay With Me during his Glasto performance yesterday. Ryan Adams is absolutely one of my favorite musicians of all time and this performance of Stay With Me gives some insight as to why I love him so much. I got to hear Ryan perform this song off his newish self-titled album in concert when he toured through SoCal last year and I can assure you, the song sounds even better live in person. For those of you who weren’t too fond of the Kanye video I shared, I hope this video makes up for it. Please enjoy.
Yeezus declared himself "the greatest living Rock Star on the planet"
Kanye West was the headline performer at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK last night (after many weeks of controversy, including a petition that sought to bar him from performing at Glastonbury altogether) and as part of his set, he delivered his own version of the Queen classic song Bohemian Rhapsody. His performance of this song was, I think, a bit of a love letter to the Glastonbury audience as a way to show respect for England‘s storied musical history. But Kanye couldn’t help being Kanye throughout his show stopping set, where at one point he declared from the Glastonbury stage — for all the world to hear — that he is “the greatest living Rock Star on the planet“. Oh, Kanye. Click the embed above to hear Yeezy‘s rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody and then click below to learn more about his headline set at Glastonbury. More »
In case you couldn't be there in person
Yesterday we got to see photos from the Gilmore Girls reunion event that took place at The ATX Festival in Austin, TX over the weekend and today we learn that video of the full Gilmore Girls panel discussion has been released for our viewing pleasure. Altho a lucky few were able to attend this event in person, the vast majority of GG fans were only able to hear about the reunion via fan and press reports. Entertainment Weekly magazine, which hosted the panel discussion, has provided full video of the panel discussion which you can watch online … so if you couldn’t be there in person, this is the next best thing. ALSO, IS THERE A 'GILMORE GIRLS' MOVIE HAPPENING?!
Last night I was at the Brooklyn Museum for Target First Saturdays having a grand ol’ time watching my new favorite performer, Junglepussy, when PITNBr Jamie hit me up on Instagram to remind me that I lit’rally watched the entire Gilmore Girls season over the course of maybe two months, and I am OBSESSED. So yes. I am here for these amazing photos from the ATX TV Festival. There are also some really cool details from the panel, where the cast and creator talked about the origins of the show, auditioning, and the recent loss of former cast member Edward Herrmann. Oh, and THE POSSIBILITY OF A MOVIE?! Click inside for more.
With the vocal talents of Nick Kroll, Aziz Ansari and Mark Maron
A few months back I fell head over heels in lurve with the new HBO series from Jay and Mark Duplass Togetherness. If you missed it, I have four (SPOILERY) words for you: Melanie Lynskey, nipple clamps. Except they weren’t nipple clamps, they were clothespins and you have to watch this show. Jay Duplass also won my heart with his role on Transparent, so I’m basically all about whatever he and his brother are doing. Click inside to find out more about their Sundance darling, Animals, which is coming to HBO soon.
Video of a Cannes Film Festival panel discussion/press conference for Mad Max: Fury Road has come to light that shows a very small reporter from the Toronto Star newspaper asking actor Tom Hardy a very sexist question about the film. When Hardy was asked if (while reading the script for Fury Road) he ever thought “why are all these women in” this “man’s movie”, Tom gave the perfect/only answer he could give. The reporter prefaced his question by revealing that he has “five sisters, a daughter, a wife and a mother” so he knows what it’s like to be “outgunned by estrogen“, as if that would make him sound better? More intelligent? Funny? When, in actuality, his question made him look like a sexist asshole. Go to the 9:45 mark to watch this exchange and see how well Tom Hardy handled this very idiotic question.
If you ever came anywhere near this blog back in 2012, there was one movie that I physically could not stop talking about—Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. It remains one of my favorite movies of all time, and I’m still not talking to any of you who haven’t seen it yet. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out that the director took home the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his latest work, Dheepan.
We haven’t talked Lupita Nyong’o fashion in a while, and that’s a real tragedy. This woman. She’s been all up on the red carpet at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and the slayage has been real. At this point, I think everyone’s seen her incredible green Gucci gown, but she also wore this beautiful white Gucci dress to one of the parties, and continued to look incredible. Damn you lucky LA folks!
It is so ridiculous to stan over a celebrity. It’s like, we don’t know them. In most cases, we’ve never met them. And yet, here we are. Stanning. Like me, on Solange‘s Instagram page, obsessing over every inch of her, whilst listening to Bad Girls. It doesn’t make sense! It doesn’t make sense to get mad at Trent ahead of time, because you just know he’s gonna end up at the FYF Fest in August, getting to hear new Solange music before you. Whatever, it’s fine.
