Mary Lynn Rajskub Spreads Her Legs, Bares Her Soul

Last night Darion and I made our way to the Steve Allen Theater here in LA to attend the opening night performance of Mary Lynn Rajskub‘s new one woman show Mary Lynn Spreads Her Legs. Darion and I saw her do a stand-up comedy show at M Bar a couple of years ago so we were really looking forward to gettin’ our yuks from MLR last night … and boy did we ever. The show is utterly fantastic and … surprisingly touching and poignant, too:

The show is all about Mary Lynn‘s pregnancy and subsequent relationship with her now husband Matthew Rolph and very funnily details all of the pitfalls that Mary Lynn endured by becoming a new mom. I don’t want to spoil the show for you in case you get to see it but … I wouldn’t let MLR babysit your child … unless you DON’T own an oven. As I said, the show is riotously funny (tho, I could go a lifetime without every hearing MLR utter the words “tight pussy” ever again) and then shockingly poignant and very, very touching. Mary Lynn is able to switch instantaneously from a funny bit to a quiet and sentimental one. We were so impressed and entertained. Mary Lynn will be performing her one-woman show Mary Lynn Spreads Her Legs at the Steve Allen Theater every weekend all Summer long, thru the end of October! Click HERE to get tix for this show … YOU MUST SEE IT!

We got to chat with her for a bit after the show, she was a total sweetheart … it’s always so nice getting to chat with her :D

After the show, Darion and I were invited to the Friends and Family soft opening night of a new bar on Hollywood Blvd. called Loaded. D’s friend Tara’s boyfriend PJ is part owner so we were happy to show up and lend our support (and get some free drinks, too). After the jump, check out some of our pics from the bar …

#cocosback

Yesterday was a very full yet extremely fun day … firstly, David and I met up with our BFFs Emma and Josh for an afternoon of grilled cheese fun at The 2010 Grilled Cheese Invitational:

Obviously something as fun as a grilled cheese festival is going to be popular so while we weren’t too thrilled with the long lines, we were thrilled with the amazing offerings that were made available. We ate and ate and ate and ate … ’twas fun, mostly.

After we finished eating, we made our way to The Standard hotel in downtown LA for a few drinks up on the Roof Bar:

It was there that I found a very cool piece of street art — an Invader mosaic.

After drinks, we parted ways with Emma and Josh and made our way to the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal City to see Conan O’Brien on his Legally Prohibited from being Funny on Television Tour. After the jump, check out some photos and read some deets from last night’s fun …

'The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On TV' Tour opens in Eugene, OR
Conan O’Brien Kicks Off His New Comedy Tour

As you may recall, we learned yesterday that funnyman Conan O’Brien has signed a deal with TBS to host a new late night talk show starting November 2010 … but last month, while Conan was still trying to figure out which TV deal he was going to take, he announced that he would be embarking on a nationwide comedy tour called The Legally Prohibited from being Funny on Television Tour … and that tour got underway last night in Eugene, Oregon. Here are a few photos and some deets from Conan‘s first night on the road:

Just hours after Conan O’Brien announced he had signed a deal with TBS for his new late-night TV gig, he kicked off his nationwide tour and brought the crowd in Eugene, Oregon, to its feet, AP reports. “This is the first time anyone has paid to see me. They’ve paid me to go away,” O’Brien told Monday’s audience of more than 2,500, an obvious reference to the former ‘Tonight Show’ host’s $32 million exit deal with NBC in January. During ‘The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On TV Tour,’ O’Brien worked the stage hard, joking, dancing and even making costume changes that, at one point, included a pink leather outfit. Warning that “lawyers are watching,” O’Brien told the crowd that he was barred from performing on TV, radio or online for the near future and that ownership of some of his bits was in question. That didn’t stop him from including a Triumph routine or bringing out the Masturbating Bear, who with a small costume adjustment became the Self-Pleasuring Panda … “You may have heard I got a new job: new assistant manager at Eugene’s Banana Republic,” he wisecracked, later acknowledging the TBS job in a parody version of ‘On the Road Again.’ O’Brien tossed barbs NBC’s way, showing short films in which he played a bald man who introduced himself as a “generic network executive,” boasted about heading one of the top 17 networks and introduced a new series called “I’m a Celebrity and I Eat Bark.” O’Brien’s sidekick Andy Richter is along for the tour, with Reggie Watts the opening act. Among O’Brien’s debut show guests were the band Spoon and, from the NBC sitcom ’30 Rock,’ cast member Jack McBrayer, who plays Kenneth the page. Other celebrities are expected to drop in throughout the tour, which heads to Vancouver, Canada, on Wednesday.

Yeah!! It’s starting to sound like Conan O’Brien is going to have the last laugh. I managed to get some sweet tickets to see Conan when he comes to LA next week and I can’t WAIT to see him perform live. It sounds like this new comedy tour is going to be a real riot. While I’m happy that his comedy tour has gotten off to a strong start, I’m most happy that he signed a TV deal with TBS. I’m convinced that he will do wonders for the network and will do much to change the landscape of late night TV. You go go, Coco!! You’ve got a lot of people cheering you on. Tho, in all honesty, it sounds like you’ve got everything worked out exactly the way you want it to be :)

Don't quit your day job
Mo’Nique Gets Back On The Comedy Trail

Mo’Nique may be a newly crowed Academy Award-winning actress (among the many acting awards she collected this past awards season) but that doesn’t mean that she is ready to give up her day job. Mo is currently on a new comedy tour called Spread the Love which has her heading around the country. Last night, Mo’Nique performed at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles, CA … here are a few photos (along with a write up about the Spead the Love Comedy Tour):

Not only is Mo’Nique riding high on winning the Washington, DC, Boston, Los Angeles and New York Film Critics’ Awards, a SAG Award and a Golden Globe Award, having a top-rated late night talk show on BET and most recently an Academy Award nomination, but she is also readying herself to embark upon a highly anticipated comedy tour—Spread the Love Tour 2010. Joining Mo’Nique on this year’s Spread The Love Tour will be her BET late night talk show counterpart comedian and actor Rodney Perry, comedian Tone-X, who will serve as the resident Man on the Street for the tour, and DJ Ant. “On this tour people can expect the kind of laughter that makes the bottom of their stomach hurt,” said Mo’Nique. “And the type of love you’ll never forget.” As it makes its trek across the country, Mo’Nique’s Spread the Love Tour will hit 20 cities during its run. The tour will kick off in New Orleans, LA at the Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena on Saturday, March 19th and will conclude in Connecticut in May. The show is being presented across the country by AEG Live with tickets going on sale in select cities beginning Friday, February 19th. Tickets will be available at aeglive.com , all Ticketmaster locations and online at ticketmaster.com and at the respective venue’s box offices. The term triple threat would be diminishing from the powerful range, the all consuming presence and the undeniable talent and reach of Baltimore native Mo’Nique. Whether she’s spreading the love and empowering women across the country through her outreach or making millions laugh with her unapologetically, raw in your face comedic antics, Mo’Nique continues to touch the masses with her keepin’ it real, no holds barred persona and attitude. Her bold, brassy stand-up routines, in your face humor and straight from the street stories will leave you wanting more. What Mo’Nique will be bringing to each city on the Spread the Love Tour will be no different–real, raw, rowdy and riotous.

Mo’Nique has only just begun her tour so the bulk of her dates are yet to come (click HERE to see if she is coming to your neck of the woods). I love that Mo’Nique isn’t putting on airs about her acting success and is getting right back on the comedy trail. She really seems like one of the realest celebs out there. While I’ve never seen her perform live, I have seen a few of her comedy specials and she always brings the hilarity. If you get a chance to see her live, I suggest you check her out … let’s not forget how the woman has been buttering her bread for most of her career. Yo go, Mo!

Watch: David Beckham, ‘Sport Relief 2010’

Back in January we learned that David Beckham posed for a special t-shirt with his picture on it that is being sold to raise money for the UK charity Sport Relief and in February we learned that he teamed up with comic actor James Corden to film a funny sketch to air on the Sport Relief 2010 telethon on UK television. Last night, Sport Relief aired in Europe and today we get to check out the skit that Becks did with Corden. Altho Becks is obviously very bummed these days due to the Achilles tendon injury which destroyed his last chance to compete in the World Cup this year, this funny skit shows Becks in much happier times … in bed with another man:

[Last] weekend David Beckham was in floods of tears after an Achille’s tendon injury put paid to his World Cup dreams this summer. And last night, he was crying again, but this time it was purely for comedy effect as he starred in a comedy skit for Sport Relief with James Corden. The Gavin And Stacey star and sportsman shared a bath together and got emotional as they held hands in bed watching Scott (Jason Donovan) and Charlene (Kylie Minogue) getting married in Neighbours. As they watched the Australian soap, a teary Becks says: ‘Don’t you think they are amazing together those two,’ to which Corden replies: ‘I think we’re amazing together’. The duo’s me-time, in which they are seen in fluffy robes, was part of a star-studded sketch in which Corden’s Gavin And Stacey character Smithy coaches a series of top stars including Andy Murray, Tom Daley, Jenson Button and the Manchester United squad featuring Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand. And after his hard work, Smithy takes a well-earned break, for a night in with the image-conscious LA Galaxy star. Away from the prying eyes of Victoria and Nessa, the boys indulge in a spot of preening. The pair share a bath together and James Corden tends to Becks’ hair, before they share a tender moment. The comedy actor said of his meeting: ‘I just wanted to lick him. Honestly, he was unbelievably nice. We went out for dinner, we went out, we socialised, we had a great time,’ he told Heat magazine. ‘And I was looking at him thinking, “Here’s a guy who’s had some truly nasty, horrible things written about him and his family in the past and yet he’s never spoken back about it, he’s always nice and is nothing but respectful to everybody”.’ He added: ‘The impact he has on everyone he meets is amazing. He was just lovely. I do feel like I sort of fell in love with him, genuinely.
Sport Relief You know when you have a crush on someone, meet them and then you go away and think, “Oh that was weird?”. It was like that – such great fun.’

Fortunately, a clip of the skit has made its way to the Internets … trust me, it’s worth seeing. James Corden — in the guise of humor — gets to live out the fantasy of countless Beckham fans in this minute and a half clip. Check it out in full, after the jump …

Thank You For Flying Pam Ann Airlines

Last night David and I met up with Darion, Loy and pretty much ever gay guy in LA to attend a special performance by Aussie comic Pam Ann at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, CA last night. Pam Ann‘s shtick is that she is a saucy flight attendant … and she is hilarious!

I was not too familiar with her show so I didn’t quite know what to expect … she was so much fun … we had a blast!! If she comes to your town, you must see her live. She is loads of fun … good times, I swear. After the show, the four of us met up for a late night dinner at Fat Fish in West Hollywood, CA and then David and I went home. Darion and Loy went to the official Pam Ann afterparty and got to meet the lady of her hour herself. It was a really fun night.

This evening, I’ll be making my way to Club Nokia in downtown LA to see KMFDM in concert:

KMFDM is one of my fave industrial bands of all time … I’ve loved them for YEARS. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them live so I’m really excited. The band graciously set me up with a photo pass so hopefully I’ll have some great pics to share tomorrow ;) Happy Friday … let the weekend commence!

Comedy Central Roasts Joan Rivers

Last night friends and longtime compatriots of Joan Rivers were invited to the CBS Studios Lot in Studio City, CA for the Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers. In previous years, Comedy Central has hosted roast tribute events in honor of actors and comedians but this year they’ve pulled out all the stops for one of the most iconic, most enduring comics alive today … barely. Here are some of the folks who came out for the Roast of Joan Rivers last night:

I was very lucky to attend last night’s taping and shared some of the zingers that were said about Joan Rivers on my Twitter account last night. There were so many more that I would’ve loved to have shared but they were wholly inappropriate and grossly offensive … and that was exactly the point. Whitney Cummings, sidekick to Chelsea Handler, was my fave roaster of the night … her bit was ENTIRELY hilarious and horribly offensive. Mario Cantone, tho I love him, was the worst roaster of the bunch. Kathy Griffin did an amazing job as host of the event but Joan, naturally, stole the show. A woman who has been in the biz for as long as she has and has achieved so much success absolutely deserves to be honored in this manner … with tasteless joke after offensive slur all night long. She looked like she had the time of her life. It was really a great event. I’ll have more personal commentary a little later on today. But I have to let you all know that the Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers airs on Comedy Central on Sunday August 9. While I’m sure it will be HEAVILY censored, be on the look out for the uncensored version of the roast that will air in the wee, wee hours of Comedy Central after it premieres on the network in a couple of weeks. It’s funny, y’all. I can’t wait to see it again myself :)
