The Nintendo Game Boy Turns 25 Years Old Today

April 21, 1989

25 years ago today, Nintendo released the Game Boy compact video game system and revolutionized the world of video gaming. On April 21, 1989, the original Game Boy was unleashed upon the world and almost immediately, a generation of video game fans took a giant leap forward into the realm of portable gaming technology. Since that time, the Game Boy has evolved into different, smaller versions (Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP) … eventually morphing into the Nintendo 3DS … but back when the portable gaming system was first released, the world was changed forever. Homage to the Game Boy must be paid. More »

Remembering Kurt Cobain 20 Years After His Death

The "Hesitant Poet Of 'Grunge Rock'"

20 years ago today, the world lost the musical genius Kurt Cobain when he took his own life at the far too young age of 27. It’s really impossible to describe the feeling that was felt on that fateful day back in 1994 unless you were there to experience it first hand. For Generation X, news of Cobain‘s death resonated in much the same way that news of John Lennon‘s death impacted people in the early 80s. For us, it is a day that most people remember in much the same way that people alive in the 1960s remember where they were when they learned of President John F. Kennedy‘s death. It’s really insane to think that two decades have passed since Kurt‘s death. In some ways, it feels like it was not long ago. In other ways, it feels like a lifetime ago. The world is so different today than it was back on April 5, 1994. In honor of Kurt‘s memory, let’s go back to that day to be reminded of the day that the “hesitant poet of Grunge Rock” died. More »

Well, today I have for you a new batch of McFly hotness from the latest issue of THE AMAZING Attitude magazine. ‘The Breakfast Club’ Took Place 30 Years Ago Today

March 24, 1984

Two weeks ago I attended a showing of the 1984 The Breakfast Club at the ArcLight Theater here in Manhattan Beach, CA and I noted at the start of the movie that the 30 year anniversary of the day that the events in the movie took place was coming up. Today, March 24, is the 30th anniversary of the day that the characters in the film bonded in detention together. On this day back in 1984, a criminal, a basket case, an athlete, a geek and a princess came together and found that they weren’t really all that different from one another. Happy Breakfast Club Anniversary, y’all! More »

The Nine Inch Nails Masterpiece Album ‘The Downward Spiral’ Turns 20 Years Old

Hey, Pig

Back in January I blogged about the 20th anniversary release of Tori Amos‘s second album Under The Pink, commenting on how important that album is to me. Today, I’m blogging about the 20th anniversary release of Nine Inch Nails‘s second album The Downward Spiral — the single most important album in my life. I know it sounds hyperbolic to say that an album can change a person’s life but in this case, it’s true. I’ve been a lifelong music fan, happily relishing in the songs that touch my soul or simply make me happy. I could list any number of albums that have had a great impact on my life in various ways but no album has truly affected the person that I am as much as The Downward Spiral has. 20 years ago today, I walked into my local record store and I paid about $9.99 for the album that would change my life forever, in ways I couldn’t even imagine. The Anniversary Issue

The TV Guide

My Monday night was a really quiet one, for the most part, in that I managed to get some stuff done around the house and I managed to finish up some reading that I started over the weekend. I mentioned previously that I spent part of a recent evening catching up on a few issues of The New Yorker magazine that I wanted to get thru and I managed to get that finished last night. The most recent issue is their annual anniversary double issue so there is a lot included for me to read. Yesterday was an anniversary of sorts for me … one that I used to celebrate but now is only a painful reminder. I wish I could tell you that Monday was a great day for me but, unfortunately, it really wasn’t. More »

Barbie Is Featured On The Cover Of The 2014 ‘Sports Illustrated’ Swimsuit Issue

#Unapologetic

For the first time ever, and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the magazine, the Barbie doll is featured on the cover and in the pages of the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. As you may be well aware, both Barbie and Sports Illustrated have been criticized in the past over their depictions of the female form and over claims that they offer a skewed and unrealistic impression of female beauty. As such, the two entities have teamed up for this new collaboration and have dubbed the promo campaign #Unapologetic. On the one hand, I can absolutely understand how this pairing could make for a genius marketing move (after all, almost everyone is very familiar with Barbie, the SI Swimsuit Issue or both) but, again, I expect that critics will have a field day with this #Unapologetic collaboration. Click below to get your first look at Barbie on the cover of this year’s SI Swimsuit Issue and learn more about this historic pairing. More »

Every Album, In Digital

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the release of The Smiths‘s self-titled debut album, the entire catalog of Smiths albums has been made available for download on iTunes. I was lucky enough to pick up The Complete Smiths box set a couple of years ago when it was released on vinyl and cd so this new release is not for me … but for you Smiths fans who have been waiting for a mastered re-release of their entire catalog, this has to be the best news ever!
