Back in February we learned that Ben Affleck and wife Jennifer Garner would be moving to the Detroit metropolitan area sometime this summer for the filming of the forthcoming superhero movie Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Today we learn that Ben and his family have already made their way to Detroit and have begun to settle in and make themselves at home. Over the weekend, we hear, Ben took his family to Detroit Kid City in the Detroit suburb of Southfield, MI and found that it was closed for a private birthday party. They asked if their 2-year old son Samuel could crash the party and they were allowed entry … because when Batman shows up to your birthday party, you let him in.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner made a surprise appearance at a superhero party in metro Detroit this weekend, much to the delight of guests. The famous couple, in town because of Affleck’s filming of “Batman v. Superman Dawn of Justice,” stopped by Detroit Kid City in Southfield on Sunday, the day that the popular play center and cafe is closed for private parties. Affleck and Garner, who arrived unexpectedly, asked if they and their son, Samuel, 2, could hang out at the party. The hosts were happy to welcome them. It turns out the event was a kids’ birthday party with a Superman theme. And then the superhero excitement was ramped up with the chance to meet Batman, Affleck’s role in the Warner Bros. mega-movie that is currently being shot here. “I spoke with Ben for 10 or 15 minutes and he was very pleased with the facility. He was very interested in getting a Detroit Kid City out in L.A.,” says Garrett Dixon of Detroit Kid City. “He said they had a blast and will definitely be in contact with us.” The venue offers a miniature Motor City play city, complete with everything from an auto factory to a music studio. There’s also a menu of organic coffee for parents and organic juices and Michigan-made snacks. Detroit Kid City has received good word of mouth from others in the film industry. During the making of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” here in 2013, Mark Wahlberg’s children spent time there.
This is pretty amazing. The real-life Batman crashing a Superman-themed kids’ birthday party — it’s brilliant. That this happened in Detroit is just the icing on the cake. It sounds like the Afflecks are fitting in nicely in the Detroit metro area. I have every confidence that they will enjoy their time in my beloved hometown :D
