Early last month we learned that former America’s Next Top Model contestant Yaya Alafia DaCosta won the role of Whitney Houston in the upcoming Lifetime made–for-TV biopic of the late singer’s life. Today we get our first look at Yaya in character as Whitney. As you can see below, Yaya has recreated the cover of Houston’s iconic 1987 album Whitney for this first promo photo and, I have to say, she kinda got the look down. Lifetime’s early-2015 biopic Whitney Houston (working title)—directed by the singer’s Waiting to Exhale costar Angela Bassett and starring former America’s Next Top Model contestant Yaya DaCosta—just began shooting. But DaCosta has already re-created the iconic cover of the pop diva’s 1987 Whitney album. And her modeling background came in handy for the quick shoot. Laughs the star, “I just looked at the picture and did the pose!” Somewhere Tyra is smizing proudly.
I’m pretty sure that Bobbi Kristina Brown won’t have anything nice to say about this photo but I like it. No, she doesn’t look exactly like Whitney but it’s a close enough approximation to satisfy me. But looking like someone and acting like someone are two different things. That said, I fully trust director Angela Bassett with this project. I’m curious to see more but I’m pretty OK with this first look at Yaya as Whitney … how about you?
