Now that Neil Patrick Harris has won a Tony Award for his lead performance in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway, his work in the show is basically done. NPH was originally scheduled to star in Hedwig until August but there was talk that he might extend the gig if he won the Tony. Today we learn that plans for him to extend aren’t happening after all because Tony Award nominee Andrew Rannells (who you may know from The Book of Mormon on Broadway and Girls on HBO) will take over the role of Hedwig in August.
The Tony-winning Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch has found its next star. Andrew Rannells has signed on for a limited engagement beginning Aug. 20. Current star Neil Patrick Harris, who won a Tony on Sunday for best actor in a musical for the title role of a transgender East Berlin rocker with a botched sex-change surgery, will play his final performance in the cult musical on Aug. 17 … Rannells has previously appeared on Broadway in the musicals Hairspray, Jersey Boys and in the original cast of The Book of Mormon, which earned him a Tony nomination for lead actor. He also was seen on Ryan Murphy’s now-defunct NBC sitcom The New Normal, and has a recurring role on HBO’s Girls … Produced by David Binder, the show has been doing sellout business, grossing $9.2 million to date. Rannells is scheduled to appear in the production through Oct. 12.
This is a great casting choice. I have been very curious to learn who would be stepping into Hedwig’s high heels when NPH steps down from the role. I was lucky enough to see The Book of Mormon on the first night of previews (way before everyone found out how great the show truly is) and fell in love with Rannells and co-star Josh Gad (who went on to voice Olaf in Frozen). NPH is a great actor, yes, but Andrew Rannells is a most-excellent Broadway performer and I know he is going to KILL the role of Hedwig. I was really hoping to get to NYC to see NPH as Hedwig but now … maybe I should wait and see Andrew in the role. HMMMM.
