Watch: LeVar Burton Wants To Revive ‘Reading Rainbow’

And he's using Kickstarter to do so

LeVar Burton has helped teach the importance of reading to countless children with his TV show Reading Rainbow that aired from 1983 to 2006 … and in reruns from 2006 to 2009. The show has been off the air ever since but if Burton is successful with his just-launched Kickstarter campaign, he hopes to revive Reading Rainbow online. LeVar‘s Kickstarter campaign has set a very lofty goal of $1 million dollars but with 24 days to go, he’s already surpassed the halfway mark by pulling in $575,000. Click below to see LeVar Burton‘s Kickstarter video announcement and see if YOU are inspired to help fund this campaign to Bring Reading Rainbow Back.

Hi. LeVar Burton here. You may know me as Kunta Kinte, from ROOTS, or Geordi La Forge, from Star Trek: The Next Generation. You also may have grown up with me on Reading Rainbow. It was my mother who taught me that, by picking up a book, I could “go anywhere” and “be anything.” Ever since Reading Rainbow began in 1983, I have dedicated myself to fostering a love of reading in children, just as my mother did for me. Over the past year, I have watched Kickstarter bring communities together to support artists and inventors. Again and again, I have been inspired by watching like-minded people team up to accomplish impossible dreams, and to change the world. Now, I am hoping you will join me on my mission: to bring Reading Rainbow back for every child, everywhere.

The Kickstarter page HERE offers a LOT of important information about this campaign and what the goal for this new incarnation of Reading Rainbow is funded. You can also find out which prizes are offered at the varying donation price points … for $1 you get LeVar Burton‘s gratitude for backing this campaign, for $10,000 you’ll get to have dinner with LeVar Burton in Los Angeles and you will get to wear the visor he wore during his Star Trek: The Next Generation days at that dinner. Wow. Reading Rainbow was such an important TV series to so many kids, I have a feeling that those grown up adult kids are more than happy to help LeVar reach his goal to Bring Reading Rainbow Back. Are you a Reading Rainbow kid? Does this Kickstarter campaign sound like something you’d like to support?

And now the Reading Rainbow song will be stuck in my head all day…..And I don’t mind at all! I loved that show when I was a kid..I’m a HUGE reader and I like to think a small part of that passion came from the show..I might be able to dig up a few bucks to throw in..

Now this is a celeb campaign worth giving to. Reading is not only important to one’s education and life skills but it’s the best way to have an adventure without leaving home. This is awesome!

Oh my goodness! My students need this! My school is one of those “in need schools” he mentioned. This show did wonders for me, and I think it could do great things for my students!

  4. It’s at $1.46 million right now and just keeps going up every time you refresh. With still a month to go, I can’t wait to see how they can expand with all the additional funding they are getting.

I proudly wear my “reading is for awesome people” tshirt with the Reading Rainbow rainbow on it. It’s no joke my favorite piece of clothing. This is AMAZING news.
“Take a look, it’s in a book …” Hello childhood.
