With Eileen, ‘In Orange’

Last night I met up with my friend Eileen for a fun dinner and movie hang, which is exactly what I was hoping to do since I hadn’t seen her for a couple of weeks. While I was on vacay in Japan for the holidays, I found out that the Cinefamily Theater (aka the Silent Movie Theater here in LA) was showing a rare concert film by The Cure and I was really bummed that I was missing it. The theater added a couple of showings for this week only and I knew that I had to see it before it was gone forever. Eileen, also a big fan of The Cure, was up for seeing the movie with me so we grabbed some food beforehand and then caught the movie afterward.

After we grabbed some food at the Rosewood Tavern on Fairfax, we made our way to the theater to see The Cure: In Orange. This 1987 concert film has only been released here in the US on VHS and Laserdisc (!!!) but a DVD version is rumored for release. The full film was uploaded to You Tube last summer but I, personally, never watched it. I knew I wanted to see it on the big screen and I’m glad I waited. Eileen and I had fun watching the show … commenting on how simpler concerts used to be in the days before cellphones. The Cure’s set was spectacular and their show was very sparse … no video screens, no choreography … just live music and lots of smoke machines. It was great. In case you’re interested, here’s a setlist of the songs that are performed in The Cure: In Orange:

01. Introduction
02. Shake Dog Shake
03. Piggy In The Mirror
04. Play For Today
05. A Strange Day
06. Primary
07. Kyoto Song

The print that was screened last night was in 35mm film … so it was all scratchy and beautiful. I’m so glad Eileen was free to hang out last night because I always have a great time with her. Today, I have nothing on the books but work and then a red eye flight to Florida where I’ll be for the rest of the week running my buns off. It should be a fun trip … I hope :) I’ll be coming atcha from the East Coast from tomorrow on … I hope you have the best Tuesday ever!
