Disney Is Planning A TV Movie Based On The Children Of Its Infamous Villains

Here Come the 'Descendants'

The Disney Channel announced today that they are readying the release of a live-action film that will focus on the teenage children of some of the most infamous Disney villains in existence. Titled Descendants, the TV movie will feature the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil, Jafar as well as the good guy Queen and King Belle and Beast. I know, this TV movie concept sounds a bit weird … and it is … as well as complicated … but you can click below to learn more about this project and hopefully sort thru the deets so that the premise makes more sense.

In a present day idyllic kingdom, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic Beauty and the Beast) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters. These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom? Kenny Ortega, the Emmy Award-winning director and choreographer of Disney’s record-setting High School Musical TV movies and feature film, returns to Disney Channel to direct Descendants … Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “We mined Disney’s treasure trove of stories and developed a new, comedic approach to the fabled characters everyone knows and loves. The result is a modern and unexpected re-interpretation of classic heritage characters utilizing contemporary, relatable settings and themes.”

Um. Yeah, even after reading the full details about this TV movie, it still sounds really weird. All of the characters mentioned are from the Fantasy world of Disney, except for Cruella de Vil who is a normal human villain. I’m not sure how she (and her son Carlos de Vil) managed to make the cut at this Disney prep school storyline but … whatevs. I’m guessing that Cruella married and had her son with a Latino, which would make her son’s name make more sense. I’m all for diversity and I’m intrigued by this notion of descendants of Disney heroes and villains but as it stands right now, this sounds kinda crazy. I’m certain kids will love it. Does this sound like a good idea for a Disney TV movie to you? Is this something you’d like to watch?

I’m sure this sounded like a good idea at some point, but this just reeks of being a campy mess

  2. carlos?! i’m all for diversity but that was so out of left field. lol!

maybe i’m biased towards disney in the 90′s but everything that has come out of the disney channel since then has been unwatchable. this movie sounds like a great idea and hopefully they’ll be able to execute it..

i’m not too crazy about it being live-action either.

  3. So its live action, not animated? I don’t think that is a good idea. Real teenagers age pretty quickly!

“These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, respectively)”

I love the idea that Evvie is the daughter/son of the Evil Queen as if Evvie is based on Evil and Evil is the queen’s actual name. I also enjoy the idea that while Cruella’s kid is Latino-like Carlos, Jafar (clearly from the Middle East) has a kid with a name which is clearly not Middle Eastern with Jay. It’s OK to include the Latino, but the Middle East is right out.
