Will Michael B. Jordan Play The Human Torch In The ‘Fantastic Four’ Reboot Film?

Flame On!!

Exciting casting news (well, rumor) to pass along today … there is a report out that claims that actor Michael B. Jordan has been cast to play Johnny Storm / The Human Torch in the upcoming superhero reboot film Fantastic Four. As you may know, Chris Evans played Johnny / Torch in the first Fantastic Four film franchise (and has gone on to play Captain America in that current film franchise) so casting Jordan would be a huge departure for the famed comic book character. If this casting news is true, Michael B. Jordan would be the first Black Human Torch … an idea that I am TOTALLY in love with!!

It seems Michael B. Jordan will be “flaming on” as our new Human Torch after all, as the guys over at The Schmoes Know Movies Podcast have exclusively revealed. According to them “a very trusted source within Michael B Jordan’s agency” has confirmed to them that he has just signed on the dotted line, and will play Johnny Storm in Josh Trank’s reboot of the Fantastic Four. The young actor has been highly in demand since his turn in Fruitvale Station, and was rumored to be up for quite a few different roles — one in Star Wars Episode VII among them. Of course we can’t post this as 100% accurate until it’s confirmed by the studio, but we know the Schmoes have good intel so I’d bet on this popping up in the trades pretty soon..maybe even later on tonight.

This is a brilliant casting move … whoever came up with the notion of casting Jordan as The Human Torch deserves a huge ass raise! Michael stars alongside Zac Efron in the new film That Awkward Moment which is due out in January and as cute as that movie looks, it really won’t do much to showcase him as a huge star. Nabbing the role of Johnny Storm / The Human Torch in a big budge superhero film like Fantastic Four will really catapult his career into the stratosphere! Let’s hope this casting rumor turns out to be true. I’ve been very uninterested in the notion of a reboot of Fantastic Four. If Michael B. Jordan is added to the cast, my excitement level will go thru the roof. Please, let this happen!

  1. 1. I LOVE him. He is so freaking hot AND talented, it is just mind blowing. I would see him in anything.

    2. As a white female, I think studios need to know that I like seeing diversity on screen! They need to understand that even though caucasians make up a large part of the United States, that doesn’t mean we only want to see caucasians in our entertainment. One of the reasons I go to movies is to see a perspective I don’t see in my everyday life. Diversity in all its forms only adds to that! The script should haven’t to include a specified description of a character being a minority (etc.) for one to be cast.

    • @Krissy: ” The script should haven’t to include a specified description of a character being a minority (etc.) for one to be cast.”

Johnny Storm isn’t a minority, however, at least not in the comic books.

I feel like I *should* have a problem with this potential casting, because I really didn’t like Jessica Alba when she took a turn as Sue Storm. Then again, maybe it’s because she was terrible, and I couldn’t see Sue Storm, just Jessica Alba being Jessica Alba with blonde hair.

(Obligatory mention that I am not white, in hopes that any comments to me will avoid the easily thrown, “Yer just racist!”)

    • I think it is great that he wasn’t a minority in the comic but they cast him anyway. Unless there is a specific reason that a character shouldn’t be a minority, I say why not? If the actor can nail the vibe of the character’s personality, I don’t see the harm. He’s a great actor, so I have no doubt that he will do a much better job than Alba! ;)

I’m interested in who will be Sue Storm since they are brother and sister….I tend to think that there is no way they will cast two African Americans for lead roles in superhero movies and they will go with the tired-ass ‘adopted’ route..on a side note, Michael B Jordan is foyyyyyne

Brother and sister are crucial part of getting “The Fantastic Four” right. The difference between that group and the X-men or the Avengers, etc., is that The Fantastic Four is a family. You are looking for a dynamic like what Pixar did so effectively with “The Incredibles”. Sue Storm has to be the solid, older, sensible sister of the hothead, girl crazy Johnny Storm; where they both know what buttons to push with each other. In the comic strip, you get it easily with the visual. They’re both blond. They both have similar builds, similar heights, similar facial structure. If Michael B. Jordan is the Human Torch and they don’t cast a woman for Sue Storm who looks like she could be his sister and they go for “adopted”, then they’ve messed up. The movie would have to spend 2 hours trying to convince us they grew up together, when casting the right African-American woman in the part would let the audience get it the first time we saw them together.
