Matt Smith Will Play Patrick Bateman In ‘American Psycho: The Musical’

Back in February of 2010 we first learned that a musical version of American Psycho was headed for the musical theater stage and today we learn that British actor Matt Smith has been cast in the lead role of Patrick Bateman. Smith, as some of you may know, rose to fame when he took over the lead role of The Doctor in the British TV series Doctor Who when David Tennant left the role. Now that Smith has moved on from Doctor Who, it would appear that he has his sights set on a career in musical theater. While I still have some concerns about an American Psycho musical, I am intrigued by the decision to cast Matt Smith as the lead.

Matt Smith will play Patrick Bateman in the American Psycho musical. The Doctor Who actor has started rehearsals today (October 7) for the adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel. American Psycho was previously made into a 2000 movie starring Christian Bale in the lead role. The musical opens at London’s Almeida Theatre on December 3 for previews before an official opening on December 12, with the original run to end on January 25, 2014. Also included in the ensemble cast are Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey, Katie Brayben, Cassandra Compton, Holly Dale Spencer, Susannah Fielding, Simon Gregor, Holly James, Lucie Jones, Tom Kay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Eugene McCoy and Hugh Skinner. Set design comes from Es Devlin, with costume design by Katrina Lindsay, choreography by Lynne Page, lighting by Jon Clark, musical direction from David Shrubsole, sound by Paul Arditti and video by Finn Ross. Depending on its performance, there are plans to then transfer the production to the West End and Broadway. The book has been adapted for the stage by Roberto Aguirre Sacasa, with music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik. It is directed by Rupert Goold. It is not known if the play makes use of the many 1980s songs referenced in the novel by the likes of Huey Lewis and the News and Phil Collins.

HMMM. I want to believe that this musical *could* be cool but I have my doubts. The film version of the book turned out so much better than I anticipated that I’m trying to keep an open mind. Still … I’m worried. I’m also worried about a new adaption of the American Psycho story here in the US. As I understand it, FX is trying to develop a sequel to American Psycho that will air on their network and will pick up the life of Patrick Bateman many years after the events in the book ended. Bateman will be a man in his mid-50’s training a new apprentice. Again, I want to believe that this made-for-TV sequel *could* be cool but … I dunno. I like Matt Smith so I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. As for the TV sequel, well, let’s just wait and see what else we hear about the production in the future. Does any of this sound interesting to you? Are you interested in seeing a musical version of American Psycho? How about a made-for-TV sequel?

In the “Doctor Who in the U.S.” special, Matt Smith went on and on about how he would love to live in New York City and this certainly would be a stepping stone to that. Arthur Darvill, who played Rory in “Dr. Who,” has been playing in “Once” on Broadway, so he may have had an influence on Matt Smith. On the other hand it could be that Matt wants a role as far from Dr. Who as possible, so what could be better than a humorless, American serial killer that sings?

MATT SMITH HELL YEAH. This is the first time you’ve mentioned him in your blog, this makes me very happy :D We need more Matt Smith (seriously, if you watch some of his interviews he seems like such a cool guy, such a character).

lastly i am very excited for him!! i want him to do well in the US so badly!! along with David Tennant ^_^

    • @Pris — UGH! That was totally my bad. I knew that … I’m not even sure why I only typed Dr. I’ll go hide in a corner now :(

haha, no need to hide! we’ve all done it when first starting out with this series!! its more common to abbreviate it here!! :)
