Watch: Ben Affleck Talks Batman On ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’

"I look down on the first comment...the first one just goes, 'Nooooooooo!'"
"I handle shit. I'm very tough."

Last month, when the world learned the shocking news that Ben Affleck has been cast as the new Batman in an upcoming series of new films, pretty much every person on Earth had something to say about his casting … except for Ben himself. Last night, during his appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Ben broke his silence for the first time and talked openly about his new gig as Batman. The video embedded above starts out with Ben talking very cutely about his children and then at around the 1:45 mark the subject of Batman is brought up and discussed. Ben talks about the criticism from fans online and offers a minuscule bit of insight about the new films directed by Zack Snyder (“It’s an incredible take on it … it’s something different“). Honestly, he seems to have a great attitude about everything and he has a LOT of time to get comfortable in his new role (the Superman vs. Batman movie won’t be out until 2015) — which is great — but it’s going to take me a while to be convinced that he’s the right man for the Batsuit. We’ll see. For now, check out this interview and see/hear what Ben, himself, has to say about the whole matter.

  1. I really think this level of criticism and his awareness of it will force a good product or at least an honest effort. The simple fact that so many people were against Heath’s Joker and were shut up the fucked, just shows that it can be done.

    • People who were against Heath being the joker never really looked at him. They just saw a pretty face, but if people had actually looked at his performances in Brokeback Mountain & Candy, they’d know he was a good actor and that he was able to pull off the job.

    • @Devonte Antonio — You really cannot compare Heath Ledger and Ben Affleck in terms of acting. Granted, playing Batman doesn’t take crazy acting prowess to pull off but let’s be real, Heath was BY FAR the better actor of the two. Can Ben do the job? Probably. I’ve yet to see anything from his previous movies to convince me just yet but … we’ll see. I, personally, was not against Ledger’s casting as the Joker because after seeing his stunning performance in ‘Brokeback’, I knew that he had the ability to do the character justice. When I think of Ben as Batman, all I can think of is ‘Daredevil’ … ugh.

    • You’re right. I’m just saying, I have hopes that since he knows people are against him, he may bring out something no one is expecting.

    • @Devonte Antonio — “he may bring out something no one is expecting.”

I certainly hope so. Trust me, I do not want him to fail … I am a HUGE fan of Batman (and DC Comics in general) so of course I want the new movies to succeed so … we’ll see.

  2. I love that he’s aware of what the fans think and what their opinions are. Not that it ‘should’ matter but it kinda calms me knowing that he genuinely wants this movie to work out. That he doesn’t want to let anyone down. Even tho its kinda hard to erase Gigli/Daredevil/… but I’m willing to give him a chance.

Ugh!!!! I LOVE Ben, I really do! Especially when he does interviews as entertaining as this one. But I do not see him as Batman, I just don’t. I’m really REALLY hoping they find a way to pull this off and not ruin Batman for me. It took YEARS to get over the Clooney Batman fiasco :(

Wow that story about other actors going through the same thing seemed so natural and unprepared…*cough*

  5. :| This just made me…ughhh! He actually knew how everyone was feeling about this stupid casting, and he went with it anyway? I didn’t know there was a lower level of respect I could have for someone… *Level Unlocked* :|
