An Evening With The Music Of Baz Luhrmann

The TV Guide

Last night I met up with my friend Adriana at the invitation of my friend Edward at the Rockwell: Table & Stage theater in Los Feliz for the opening night performance of For The Record: Baz Luhrmann In Concert. The show features musical performances from Luhrmann‘s films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby. Because I am a HUGE fan of all of those films, I had no doubt that I would love the show. I was unprepared for just how amazingly inventive and clever the production is. I not only loved the show, I was completely BLOWN AWAY by every second of last night’s performance.

Instead of featuring collected songs from each show individually, this production interweaves songs, stories and characters thruout the entire performance to craft a new way of experiencing the music and storytelling of Baz Luhrmann. I’m not kidding when I say that this production is absolutely wonderful from start to finish. Rumer Willis is getting a lot of attention for playing the Juliet role in this show but really, the entire cast is beyond amazing. I’m hesitant to single out anyone in particular because everyone is a star in this show. I was charmed, to say the least, by everything I saw last night. Truly, it was such an amazing experience, I wish all fans of Baz Luhrmann films could see this show. If you’re here in LA, you can find out more information about when this show is being performed HERE (the cast changes from night to night, so you might even want to see it twice). It was all I could do to keep from singing out loud thruout the entire performance but I think that’s the point. This show is catered towards fans of these films and these songs … it’s impossible to NOT want to sing along. Gah, so much fun.

Adriana and I had a blast …

… and an unexpected pleasure for me was getting to meet Lindsey Gort, the actress who has been cast as the young Samantha Jones in the upcoming second season of The Carrie Diaries. She’s a good friend of my friend Edward and she was just the cutest thing ever. I loved meeting her so much. I also got to meet and say hello to Rumer and her mother Demi Moore last night … that was pretty cool. I can’t thank Edward enough for showing Adriana and me such a great time last night. Ah, so much fun.

Today, OY, I have a million things to do. I have to get out to Pasadena to pick up my race bib for the Awesome 80s Run! tomorrow, then I have to get back to put together my outfit before I meet up with Tamar for an early dinner before we go to the LA Indie Film Festival for a screening of her short film. Then I have to make my way to the El Rey Theater to see The Breeders in concert (again). I’m not sure if I can manage it all but I’m gonna hafta try. UGH. Happy Friday!!

Trent, I always wondered what it would be like for you when you meet celebrities you’ve written about! :) I’m so jealous that you get to see this show! I know I would LOVE it and also have to try my best to not sing aloud.
