Kanye West Reportedly Turns Down Role As Judge On ‘American Idol’

Rumor Has it Dr. Luke is IN, will.i.am is OUT

Altho nothing has been confirmed by anyone just yet, we’ve been hearing that Jennifer Lopez has been offered a LOT of money to return as judge on American Idol for the forthcoming new season of the show. But talk of J. Lo‘s return isn’t the only Idol gossip going around. Apparently, Kanye West was offered a judging slot on AI but reportedly because of the “mainstreamness” of the gig, he turned them down. Additionally, we are hearing that music producer Dr. Luke may be in as judge … and will.i.am is out. HMMM. It sounds like American Idol is still having a devil of a time determining the judging panel for the new season … which sucks for them because interest in the show has been tanking in recent seasons :/

File this under “Things That Could Have Been.” Kanye West has been scarce on girlfriend Kim Kardashian’s reality show, but he very nearly became a regular on another popular reality TV series: American Idol. A source tells Us Weekly exclusively that the hip hop star was offered the third and final spot on Idol’s judging panel for the upcoming 13th season. After thinking it over, however, he decided to pass, in part because he worried it would hurt his reputation. “He didn’t want to go that mainstream,” the source tells Us of the “Black Skinhead” rapper, 36, who has a 2-month-old daughter, North, with Kardashian, 32. “He didn’t want to lose any street cred. So he turned it down.” The insider notes that Idol producers also met with three other contenders for the spot: Will.i.am, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Rodney Jerkins. In the end, though, their top choice appears to be songwriter and record producer Dr. Luke (real name: Lukasz Gottwald). As Us Weekly exclusively revealed on Aug. 19, Dr. Luke — who’s worked magic with the likes of Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears — is currently in talks to become the third judge on the FOX reality competition. He would join Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez, who served on the panel in 2011 and 2012 and recently signed on again to take one of the spots left by departing judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Randy Jackson.
Reps for FOX, Jerkins, and Dr. Luke had no comment on the story.

Honestly, at this point I don’t know that anything or any one judge could help American Idol‘s plummeting ratings … except for Kanye West. Can you imagine him as a judge on that show? Damn, I’d tune in weekly to see him dole out his pearls of wisdom, no lie. But, alas, it’s not meant to be … whether Kanye really did turn down the gig (if he was even offered the job) or not, I just can’t see him on a competitive reality TV show like this … not at this point in his career. As for Dr. Luke reportedly joining the show … I’m down with that but it’s still not enough to get me to watch (even tho I’ve loved his work with Britney Spears). J. Lo and Keith Urban as Idol judges is just so boring to me. Kanye would’ve been an amazing addition but … if he’s not doing the show, I don’t think anyone else out there would be able to get me to watch. How about you?

Anyone’s better than Nikki Minaj and Mariah.

  2. lol..if this is true..then fox is more delusional than i thought. i mean really…they thought they could get Kanye? geez. Dr Luke is more creditable than will.i.am but they really should just pull the plug & put this show out of its misery.

Kanye thought it would make him too mainstream and lose street cred?! Hold up Holmes, I need you to look at your babymama and repeat that phrase. Now understand why the rest of us are over hear laughing. Just stop.
I agree, Idol just needs to die at this point. It’s doing no one any favors.
