Lady Gaga Releases The Lyric Video For ‘Applause,’ Incites Controversy With New Contest

So the other day Lady Gaga released a lyric video for her new single, Applause. Folks have not been going especially gaga over the new jam, but her Little Monsters remain devoted… even to a fault. Here’s what’s going on. Gaga announced on Twitter that she was starting a contest for her biggest fans. The only thing is, the way you win the contest (and a chance to party with Gaga in Europe) is by, basically, having enough money to buy as many copies of the Applause single as you can. A lot of her fans got pissed when they heard the qualifying factors for the contest, but some of them are legitimately prostituting themselves out in exchange for Applause proofs of purchase! Um. What?!?!?! Read more about this creepiness inside and click above to check out the lyric video for Applause.

Spin has the deets:

In what appears to be a thinly veiled bid to get “Applause” to the top of the charts, Lady Gaga is dangling a huge prize in front of her rabidly devoted fans: a trip to Europe to meet Mother Monster herself. The controversial goal, no doubt, is to inspire the Little Monsters to purchase multiple copies of the song, make constants radio requests, and post about the track repeatedly on Twitter, with creative selfies and videos encouraged.

“Screenshot your ‘Applause’ purchase @ladygaga request to radio, & hashtag #Applause well choose 2 devoted fans to go WITH me to ITunes fest!” she tweeted. “The 2 fans w the most purchase/gift screenshots, radio requests, ‘Applause’ selfies/video, will fly international to meet me+watch the show!” Specifically, Gaga will send the plucky pair to London for a meet-and-greet at the iTunes music festival on September 1.

Naturally, many fans cried foul at the suspect request, arguing that they don’t have the money to buy copies of the ARTPOP song ad infinitum, and accusing the Lady of only rewarding only the wealthier among them. She clarified soon after, tweeting, “The TechHaus will collect your data as it feeds through Twitter, & remember its not just about purchases, we will choose creative monsters!”

In a truly bizarre twist, reports that some fans are even offering up sexual favors in exchange for proof of an “Applause” purchase, which seems rather drastic. Check out this NSFW Craigslist ad to see how far this guy is allegedly willing to go to meet Gaga.

Friggen madness. I mean, I love me some Kerry Washington but I’m not about to do the damn thing for a chance to meet her, lol! OMG, these Little Monsters are going overboard! But I also feel like the way Lady Gaga initially described the contest, it sounded all kinds of wrong. Why ask anyone buy a bunch of copies of the same damn song? And why turn that into a competition when the majority of your fans will not even be able to compete? I mean, other than money and sales. Like, why do that?

What do you guys think of the contest? Will any of you be entering for your shot at a night on the town with Gaga?

Sounds like Gags is gettin’ ready to release a new fragrence… Desperation, by Gaga!

I’m going to try and say this as calmly and as rationally as possible. I in no way consider myself a Little Monster but when Gaga came out I appreciated her music and her approach to an extent.
However, beginning with the Born This way era, I felt she began to go overboard by promoting her personal politics and beliefs as part of her artistry instead of letting the music speak for itself. Not to mention, the songs were not as memorable to me.
And now, I cannot fathom supporting her with an iTunes purchase or anything. Asking fans to spend more money than they have budgeted just to say she’s number one is not only desperate and tacky but inconsiderate of other artists who don’t ask their fans to go to such lengths just for the sake of being number one. However, in all honesty it diminishes the value of what a number one single should mean.

It doesn’t seem to be working since she’s #4 on the iTunes chart here in Canada.. I’ve never seen another artist try so hard to be on top or try and beat out other artists.. Lady Gaga, you’re a pop star.. stop trying so hard..

A picture says a thousand words and none of this one says Gaga is number 1. You win Trent!

    • Shannon

Trent, NOOOoooo! SO wrong! I love it, lol!

I actually am not a Gaga or Katy Perry fan so I have no horse in this race. But I do give Katy props for acting pretty classy in the midst of all of this manufactured hype and keeping her eye on the prize.

I think Gaga was always desperate, we just didn’t know her as well during the first album era. I remember when Just Dance came out – I thought it she was cute, cheeky and fun. Wow was I mistaken. She turned out to be insanely self-obsessed, rude and disrespectful of those who paved her way (read: Madonna, Britney) and in some cases – just plain bitter and mean.

I’m not sure what her deal is right now but the lyrics to Applause are obnoxious. If she really lives for other people clapping for her, she needs to find a new hobby.

I agree. She’s acting like she’s the second coming and she’s barely into her 3rd album.
Katy I appreciate because it seems like she is having fun and just doing her thing- not trying to bankrupt or corrupt fans.
And now she’s acting a fool with Perez Hilton- this is going to get old quick.

I’m LOVING the new GaGa single right now. The Katy Perry song is pretty good. I’m also ready for some new Britney. Fall is going to be all about new music & I can’t wait!

  • jessica

multiple copies of the same song? ….Since most of her fans who might partake in this contest are in high school, how about supporting a charity that helps LGBTQ youth etc.

  • Jake

Lady Gaga just seems desperate lately when it has come to promoting this CD. The idea behind the song left a bad taste in my mouth, though i found the track itself somewhat catchy. I’m just kind of over her now.

    I’m here for Britney tbh

Maybe its me, but first time hearing this song I hated it…..the end of a good run for her. Now its about the 5th or 6th time and ill say it……Im loving this song. I think once someone gets their hands on remixing this single its going to be fun and everyone will be playing. I don’t know how she does it, takes poop and turns it into gold. Good for her!
