Movie Review: ‘Elysium’

Last night I met up with my friends Tamar, Ollie and Caleb for a dinner/drinks/movie/drinks hang and had an absolute blast. The dinner/drinks/drinks part of the night was the best … the /movie/ part was not. Ah well. I met up with Tam at her place before we met up with Ollie and Caleb at Pho Cafe in Silverlake. Afterward, we grabbed drinks at Good Luck Bar in Los Feliz before catching the 9:50 showing of Elysium. I had heard mixed reviews so I wasn’t all that keen on seeing it but we went to The Vista theater which is old timey and awesome so, it was worth giving the movie a go. Unfortch, I didn’t really care for the movie all that much. Still, I had a great night with my friends and that’s really all that matters.

Tamar summed up the movie best … Elysium plays like one long movie trailer (it attempts to be exciting but ends up feeling hallow). IMHO, the story is painfully weak and every attempt is made to make the movie exciting by throwing in action scenes … that don’t really go anywhere. There isn’t a scene that lasts more than 5 minutes and at every step, each development gets wrapped up immediately before the next scene comes along, then 5 mins. later that development is wrapped up. I have no problem suspending belief in a movie but you have to give me something to work with. I didn’t anything inventive or interesting in this movie. Poor Man vs. All the Rich People isn’t really a novel storyline. I figured the special effects or the acting would make me care … neither did. This movie also features THE WORST ACCENTS I think I’ve ever heard in a film in my life. Jodie Foster, man, her talent is completely wasted in this movie. Not only is her character paper thin but I truly wanted to punch her face every time she spoke with that stupid accent. I really tried to find a redeeming thing to like about this movie but I couldn’t come up with one. The acting, writing, direction was all bad. I know there are a few positive movie reviews for Elysium but I just cannot give one here. The movie is bad, I didn’t like it :(

BUT, just because the movie wasn’t great doesn’t mean I didn’t have fun last night:

I have the best friends in the world and getting to spend time with them is like hanging out with family. We had a lot of fun, I can’t wait til we can all hang again :)

Not sure the plan for today but it’s freaking beautiful outside so I thing I’ll get out of the house today and soak up the sun. Happy Saturday!!

Thanks for the review- waiting for the rental! Bad accents distract me terribly. Brad Pitt: “Now you know who you are fighting!” It’s the only line I can remember from that movie. Struggling to even remember the title but he played a God I think. Ugh!!
