‘The Canyons’ Is Lindsay Lohan’s Biggest Film Flop . . . So Far

Earlier today we previewed Lindsay Lohan’s upcoming appearance on Oprah’s Next Chapter wherein it appears that she has finally seen the light and decided to turn her life around for the better … but right now, we are reminded just how far Lindsay has to go to find true career success. Lindsay’s new movie The Canyons opened in theaters this weekend and unfortunately for her (and the folks who shelled out the money to fund the film), it appears that the movie will turn out to be her biggest box office flop to date. It’s been a very long time since Lindsay has enjoyed success in film and yet, people still putting her in movies. It is reported that it cost $250,000 to make The Canyons … but thus far ticket and download sales of The Canyons has only brought in about $30,000. Yikes.

Lindsay Lohan’s comeback movie “The Canyons” has become her biggest flop to date after bringing in a measly $30,100 at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend. The actress appears onscreen alongside real life porn star James Deen in the low-budget erotic thriller, but the film failed to gross even a fraction of its reported $250,000 production costs in American cinema takings over the weekend. The movie was widely panned by critics and its paltry takings makes it Lohan’s biggest film failure in terms of opening weekend earnings figures, especially when compared to her earlier efforts – hit comedy “Mean Girls” made an impressive $86 million when it opened in the U.S. in 2004, while “Herbie: Fully Loaded” made $64 million in 2005. Before “The Canyons,” Lohan’s lowest grossing film was “Chapter 27” which co-starred Jared Leto as Mark Chapman, John Lennon’s murderer, earning a first weekend total of just $56,215 in 2008.

OOF! I guess the only good thing about this terrible news is that The Canyons was made BEFORE Lindsay went to rehab and reported started cleaning up her act. It’s possible that the film could continue to bring in money but it seems more likely that the people who were ever willing to pay for this movie have already done so. And just because The Canyons flopped so bad, it doesn’t mean that her movie career is completely over … BUT, I think it’s going to take many years of serious hard work for Lindsay to ever get back her ability to deliver a good performance on screen again. At this point, anyone foolish enough to cast Lindsay Lohan in any of their movies is just asking for failure. It’s probably a better idea for Lindsay to focus on cleaning up her life for a few years before she attempts to seriously reboot her acting career.

What you failed to mention, though, is that it opened in only FOUR theaters. So, this article is extremely misleading. It makes it sound like this film had some wide distribution, in thousands of theaters. $31K divided by 4 screens is roughly $7,800 a screen in 10 days. Elysium has grossed $33M on 3,284 screens which only translates to a little over $10K per screen.

The Canyons may be total tripe, but it’s not doing quite as poorly as this entry would have you believe. Let’s cut her a bit of a break.

    • @Patrick Cain — Yes but the reason that it only opened in so few theaters is because theater owners who previewed the film didn’t want to carry it … which is why the movie is also available for download/On Demand. One could make the argument that The Canyons is her biggest film flop because it wasn’t deemed good enough to even play in most theaters. I’m very willing to cut the girl some slack when it’s deserved but I don’t think it’s deserved in this instance. Lindsay has had a string of awful films that have gotten worse and worse. This just illustrates that she may have hit the bottom of the barrel. The good news is that she has nowhere to go but up.

Great point! It seems sometimes that everyone wants this young woman to fail…we should cut her some slack while she’s clean and sober. Might encourage her through recovery as opposed to wishing failure on her :)

Also, last week it said that VOD, this movie was doing well. That wouldn’t be included in the box office. So it might actually be doing better than stated in the article. I know that’s how i watched it.

Whoever wrote this article needs to learn what a fraction is…

If Lindsay is smart, she will reach out to Tina Fey STAT, if anyone can help resurrect her career Tina can..maybe not a mean girls part 2 but a good comedy would do wonders

The Canyons will open here next week at the local arts theater and did not play at the wide release theaters. Such movies typically do not make much money, but is way too early to tell how well the picture will do in those venues.

I applaud her efforts to remain sober and the work she obviously did in rehab and will continue to do…but I feel like it is time for homegirl to find a new profession…college maybe?

i remember reading this piece (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/13/magazine/here-is-what-happens-when-you-cast-lindsay-lohan-in-your-movie.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0) back in january and it seemed like right from the get-go this film was not truly expected to be a hit. but who knows. i do wish her the best of luck – i mean, the 12231354th time’s a charm, right? ;)
