Movie Review: ‘Only God Forgives’

After Darion and I bid farewell to San Diego Comic-Con yesterday afternoon, we rode the rails all the way home to LA to enjoy the rest of our weekend in as relaxing a way possible. I got caught up on some TV and then decided to head out to the movie theater to see Ryan Gosling’s new film Only God Forgives. The film opened here in LA this weekend and altho I’ve read some really bad reviews for the film, I knew that I had to see it for myself. While I can understand why some people might not like the movie, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it … mostly. Click below to read my thoughts.

Now, just because Ryan Gosling is in the movie you might think that is the only reason I liked it. I will confess that Gosling’s appearance in the movie is what made me want to see it, yes, but he’s not the reason that I ended up liking the movie … he’s not even the best part. Honestly, any actor could’ve played his role in Only God Forgives. He makes the same face for about 89% of the movie … he delivers something like 17 lines thruout the whole film and just stands around looking pretty. This is not a complaint but it’s real talk … Ryan doesn’t really offer anything special in this film. Kristin Scott Thomas and Vithaya Pansringarm are the real standouts in this film. Thomas delivers the best/worst one-liners and Pansringarm is just a bad ass. But, to be fair, I understand why the film is getting panned. It’s a very slow moving, non-story that doesn’t really give us much in terms of a “movie”. To me, Only God Forgives is like an art piece … a modern art piece. Either you get it and like it or you don’t and hate it. I liked it. It’s kind of like an emo version of Kill Bill without any of the action. I dunno … the direction, the music, the slow pacing … it all appealed to me. That being said, I don’t know that I would recommend this to many people. I can’t think of any of my friends who might like this movie … therefore, many of you prolly wouldn’t like it either. But, I needed to see it for myself and I’m glad that I did so … use your best judgement.

Here are a few photos from my day yesterday before I returned home to LA from San Diego:

The weekend was just … too much fun. I’m glad I went and I plan to go back to Comic-Con. I’m also very glad it only happens once a year cuz, Lord, 3 days of intense nerdness is a lot to handle. I get to be home for about a week before my next adventure so … I’m looking forward to TRYING to relax. Happy Monday, y’all!!

i hear this movie is kind of like ‘Drive’ – you either like it or you hate it. i find Ryan to be one of the few people who can pull off a movie with next to no lines, which is probably why i’ll be watching this movie sometime in the next few days.

    • @nicole — I LOVE ‘Drive’. This movie isn’t as good, not even close, but yeah … either you like these kinds of movies or you don’t.

Ah, khal drogo and the Winchester brothers! I swear that could only happen in dreams! You are a very lucky man to have witnessed such magic. Even Sam is impressed with his fortune.
