Yesterday we got to hear an early leak of the new Selena Gomez track Love Will Remember that will be featured on her upcoming new album Stars Dance, due out in a couple of weeks. Today we get our first look at Selena as a fashion designer in a set of new promo photos released by Adidas for her new clothing line for the company called Neo. Aimed at teenage girls (who else), the Neo clothing line has a rock chick edge to it that is meant to appeal to the Selena Gomez fan in all of us (well not ME us but us us in general … tho, that cute leather jacket? She may have been a teen princess but Selena Gomez is showing is now a grown up a fashion queen. The 20-year-old has channeled her inner sexy rock chick in a fun and flirty advertising campaign for her new clothing range. The singer is adding designer to her long list of talents with Adidas giving the Disney star her very own line. Dubbed Neo, the street wear range, which includes shoes and clothing, is aimed at teenage girls. Despite the rock chick look designed for teens, Selena made sure to separate herself from her pop princess image. For the advertising campaign Selena wore her voluminous brown locks in a teased messy bedhead style. Making sure to keep her look edgy, the 20-year-old wore dark smoky eyes and smudge pink lipstick over her bee stung lips. For the campaign Selena runs a muck inside a design warehouse climbing up ladders, jumping on couches and rolling on her inspiration sketches while screaming on the floor … The Neo range Selena says is about having confidence and fun with you look. Launching the line she said: ‘I love playing around with fashion and like clothes that are fun, easy to wear and comfortable. My collection has a rock chic theme and it’s confident, rebellious and fun. It’s also a little bit darker and I think it encourages girls to put their own stamp on their individuality and show confidence in what they are wearing.’
Now, I’m not sure how much “designing” Selena Gomez did for this new 53-piece fashion line but I think it was very smart of Adidas to team up with Gomez for her own collection. When fans believe that their favorite celebrity designed the clothing they are wearing, they feel a bit of a connection with that star. I’m not going to lie, I love the items I won from the David Beckham Bodywear collection at H&M cuz I thing, “Hey, Becks had a hand in crafting this shirt … pair of sweats … underwear” (Incidentally, Becks also teamed up with Adidas Originals for his own line of clothing back in 2009, tho it wasn’t as widely known/popular as his H&M line has been). There is great appeal for fans in the belief that they are wearing something that came almost directly from a fave celeb. My guess is that like many celebrity “fashion designers”, Selena just pointed out at pictures of things she liked (with no actual sketching to be had) and the line was created from her input. It’ll be interesting to see how well this line does for Selena but I just love the girl so I hope she enjoys great success. I’ve said all along, she strikes me as the new generation’s Britney Spears … if she is half as successful as Britney is (and continues to be) then she’s headed for great future (er, hopefully sans that whole Kevin Federline —-> mental breakdown thing).
