Movie Review: ‘The Bling Ring’

Yesterday was a nice full day for me. After I finished up with work I made my way to East LA to visit my good friend Josh Z. in the hospital after he underwent shoulder surgery yesterday. He has been such a good friend to me that I just wanted to be there for him to try and cheer him up a bit. After my visit, I met up with my friend Johnny for dinner at Tortilla Republic because we were LONG overdue for a catch-up date. Then I raced to Century City to meet up with Kirsten, Darion, Loy and Ryan at the AMC Theaters to see The Bling Ring. I’ve been DYING to see this movie since it opened here in LA on Friday and I did not want to miss my first opportunity to check it out. I am happy to report that I loved The Bling Ring pretty much entirely.

OK, so, The Bling Ring is the new Sofia Coppola film that tells the real life story of a group of young burglars here in LA who went on a year long crime spree robbing the homes of various celebrities. You may be familiar with the story since these real life events just took place back in 2009-2010. Sofia based her screenplay on the Vanity Fair article The Suspects Wore Louboutins which outlined the crime spree while featuring interviews with some of the culprits. As a huge fan of celebrity and pop culture, I couldn’t help but be entertained by this story. I distinctly remember when this crime spree too place here in LA and to see it fictionalized on the big screen just a few years later, well, I continue to find the tale hugely entertaining. Maybe it’s because I’m much older than these teenage criminals but I spent a lot of my time just shaking my head at the movie screen. These kids could’ve gotten away with MILLIONS in stolen property and money if they just knew when to stop. It was clear that they were going to continue their crime spree until they got caught … which is exactly what happened. I’m sure there was a fair share of exaggeration in the film but I honestly found the portrayal of the Bling Ring crooks 100% believable. I suspect that if you’re a fan of this blog, you’ll be a fan of The Bling Ring. I really enjoyed it and I deffo plan to see it again in theaters at least one more time. OH and in case you’re wondering, you can click HERE to find out where the Bling Ring kids are today.

As I mentioned above, I spent part of my afternoon visiting with Josh and Emma in the hospital. You may recall that poor Josh broke his collarbone back in January and after all these months of not healing, the decision was made to have a steel plate put into his shoulder :(

So far, he’s in good spirits. He was on pain blockers yesterday so he was his usual goofy self, it was nice to see him looking relatively well. I hung out for about an hour before I had to jet off to my dinner with Johnny. I always have the best time with him. We got ourselves all caught up and hopefully we’ll get to hang out again soon.

After dinner, I met up with the gang at the movies and had a blast with them:

I wrapped up my night with a visit to the Sprinkles Cupcake ATM in Beverly Hills so that I could make an after-hours cupcake withdrawal. MMMMM.

I don’t have big plans for today. I think I’m gonna visit Josh again, see how he’s doing then … we shall see. Hope you are having a happy Hump Day!!

Sending Get Well Soon wishes to JoshZ!

Gaaahh…thanks a lot, dude. Just tweaked my diet to exclude cupcakes for awhile, so am having massive cravings because I am a junkie. Then you had to go and post about that amazing Sprinkles Cupcake ATM. What a concept!

A cupcake ATM? That is amazing. I want one in Sacramento.

    Emma! (Not your friend)

So excited to hear you liked it. I’m going to see it very soon. Maybe tonight!

And well wishes for your friend!

Breaking your collarbone hurts so much, or so I have heard. Had an uncle that broke his in a go cart accident. Hoping Josh heals now with the surgery!

Also the name of that restaurant, Tortilla Republic, I love it.

  • Emily

Oh poor Josh! I remember reading about his injury and Emma learning to cook and making delicious cupcakes. So perhaps another round of cupcakes might be in order? (Sorry rOXy.)
Best wishes for a full, swift recovery to Josh! Tell Emma Emily the Bag Lady says hi! That’s great you’re visiting the hospital, what a good friend.

I also enjoyed it. Coppola captured both the glamour and banality of what they wanted but actually had.

    • @Katy– yes, very well said!
