Watch: ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Releases A First Trailer

Away We Go Again
"Was that an earthquake?"

Last December Peter Jackson released the first film of a new trilogy based on the JRR Tolkein novel The Hobbit and today we get our first look at the first trailer for the second Hobbit film. Titled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, this second film will open in theaters on December 13 … just about one year after the first film was released. Click the embed above to see what Bilbo Baggins and his Middle Earth gang get up to in this second film installment. Keep an eye out for Lost actress Evangeline Lilly as she makes her debut as an elf. Considering how unimpressed I was with the first Hobbit film, I can’t say I’m all that jazzed for this second film … at least not yet. What do y’all think? Does this look like a winner … or a snoozer?

  1. I liked the first film and the second definitely looks darker. Plus, there is the added bonus of getting Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in non Sherlock scenes together! Can’t wait!

    Dragon. That is enough.
But seriously, it is really annoying they split this up into 3 films. As a mildly hardcore Tolkien nerd, I just find it…infuriating. I’ve watched the first Hobbit film three times and each time I’m more annoyed by the changes they made to the story (The Pale Orc wtf?) and the fact that Martin Freeman – a funny, talented man absolutely born to play Bilbo Baggins – seems wasted. The whole franchise has fallen victim to the “whole lotta stuff goin on” generation…too many ridiculous action scenes, not enough Bilbo!
I will watch because hi. dragon. and also a dragon who’s voice is Benedict Cumberbatch, but really…really annoyed by the whole thing.
