First Look: The Turtles From ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Surface On Set

Yesterday we saw the first photos of actress Megan Fox in character as reporter April O’Neil on the NYC set of the upcoming film adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Today we get to see photos of the actual turtle actors on set filming new scenes and as you can see below, they were “in character” … sorta. Actors Jeremy Howard (Donatello), Noel Fisher (Michelangelo) and Pete Ploszek (Leonardo) were spotted on set in full motion-capture suits that will allow digital animators to turn the into CGI Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in post production. Click below to see the fun photos.

Curiously, the fourth turtle actor Alan Ritchson (Raphael) was absent from this day of filming. As you can see in the photos above, Donatello, Michelangelo and Leonardo appear to be restrained by shackles … so it seems like in this part of the movie, they need to be rescued by Raphael in scenes that have yet to be filmed. Altho this information, which is purely speculation, might be a bit spoilery I don’t think it will really take away from the enjoyment of the film … that is, if the film turns out to be an enjoyable experience. As I’ve said all along, I’m not a big fan of Michael Bay films so I’m worried about this film. That said, I am impressed that they are using Avatar-like technology to animate the TMNT characters in this movie so … I’m reserving judgement. While it’s kind of neat to see the actors wearing these motion-capture suits, part of me yearns for the days when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wore big rubber suits:

I’m kind of interested in seeing how they’ll look once the movie is done now.

Those suits look hilarious out of context!

My expectations for this movie are really low. I totally get where you are coming from. I don’t know. I guess I’m setting myself for disappointment. But still, Team Donatello for life!

Are low expecations part of Bay’s plan? If so, it is working brilliantly. That is all I seem to hear about this film!

I can’t believe how much they’re changing for this new film.

Just saw part of an interview where Bay says they won’t even be eating pizza! Come on, now!

…DS: And that carries a lot of weight with fans. As do other aspects of the characters, the fun-loving, pizza eating, party guys, and so on…

MB: Well, yeah. It’s interesting how invested some fans can be in these things, even when they may not make much logical sense, right? I mean, the pizza thing is a great example. Turtles would never eat that stuff. And when I started running other options for test groups, they were appalled. I wanted to do something that presented a healthier life for the young kids that this film is really for. Plus, so many of these kids now can’t even eat pizza, with all the gluten and dairy issues anymore. So, I’m sure I’ll catch some heat from the older fans, but the kids just getting exposed to the Turtles now can start getting excited about tempeh and salads!

    • @Matt — Michael Bay sucks the SUCK! He ruins everything. EVERYTHING. Blah.

Is it just me, or do those shells look HUGE?
