Jennifer Lopez WILL Return To ‘American Idol’ This Season After All

Last week a report came out that alleged that American Idol producers tried to secretly execute a plan that would’ve replaced current Idol judge Mariah Carey with ex-Idol judge Jennifer Lopez midseason this season due to plunging TV ratings. A few PITNB readers thought the report smelled fishy … that the report was leaked as a way to promote the show and possibly a performance appearance by J. Lo on the show. Well, wouldn’t you know it … today we learn that Lopez WILL, in fact, perform on the finale episode of American Idol in a couple of weeks. HMMMM. My friend Marc Malkin at E! News has the deets.

Jennifer Lopez is coming back to American Idol! The former judge will return to perform on the finale next month, a source exclusively tells me. No word yet if Lopez will be belting out a tune—and shaking her iconic booty—on the first or second night of the two-part finale airing May 15 and 16. Rumors that J.Lo was in talks to perform began circulating last week after it was reported that Idol producers tried hatching a plan to bring her back as a judge. A supposed plan that, if you hadn’t heard, included giving either Mariah Carey or Nicki Minaj (or both of them) the boot. “There will definitely be changes to the judging panel for next season,” a source told E! News last week. “Fox thought the Nicki-Mariah contrast would make for ratings, but there is concern it is like nails on [a] chalkboard for middle-America viewers.” But a rep for Idol shot down any chatter about changes at the judges’ table, saying, “This is just another ridiculous Idol judge rumor, likely started by talks of Jennifer performing on the finale.” We’re happy to see that the talks turned into something real. See you at the finale, Jennifer! An Idol rep declined to comment on J.Lo’s upcoming performance.

In all honesty, I had *no idea* that J. Lo was so beloved on AI. Granted, I haven’t watched the show with any seriousness since season 1 so I really don’t know how the dynamics of the judging panel has played out over the years but … dang, it sounds like Idol fans really love Jenny from the Block. That said, I did watch AI this season and I, personally, enjoyed having both Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj on the show. Nicki has been, IMHO, the best judge this season … it would be a shame if she gets the axe next season (will someone PLEASE fire Randy Jackson … like, please. I’ll pay. Fire him. Please). As for Mimi, I’m not sure what will happen. I’d love to see her back on the show because I like seeing her live on TV on a weekly basis. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens next season. We do know for sure that Mimi, Nicki AND J. Lo will all be on the AI finale this month … maybe that’s the best formula yet?
