Earlier this year we learned that Nine Inch Nails is coming back to the concert performance stage later in the year and even tho there has yet to be an official announcement about new music (outside of the two new songs Trent Reznor promises for the upcoming tour), I think many fans are hopeful that we will get to hear new NIN stuff soon. In the meantime, NIN drummer Ilan Rubin is hard at work on the release of a new album by his solo project The New Regime. A new album titled Exhibit A will be released next month and today we get to hear the first single from the album, a track titled Daydream. Click below to hear this new single in full, learn more about Exhibit A and check out a cool promo video that previews tracks from the album.
Ilan Rubin, musical mastermind behind the one-man outfit, The New Regime, has announced that Exhibit A, will be released worldwide on May 7th, 2013. Exhibit A will be The New Regime’s third release, and is the first installment of Rubin’s Exhibits series, where he will be releasing new EP’s as a series of “Exhibits” over time. Most recently in the news for rejoining Nine Inch Nails on drums for their upcoming world tour, and drumming on Paramore’s Self-Titled album, set to release on April 9th, 2013, Ilan is excited to announce what he personally has been working on for quite some time. The modern age of music is dictating a new approach to releasing material. Gone are the days of reliance on formal singles and/or albums, and in their place waits a space of creative freedom for artists. Ilan Rubin never fit traditional molds anyway. Despite the energy and enjoyment of playing with artists like Nine Inch Nails, Angels & Airwaves, and Paramore, Rubin felt the urge to do more and was always at work creating his own music, his own sound, his own vision – The New Regime.
On the Exhibits series, Rubin explains, “When it came time for a third release, I had enough material for almost two full-lengths. But, unlike my first two albums, these songs weren’t written with a definitive vision in mind. I realized that this broader spectrum of ideas was an exciting thing – I could release the music as a series of EPs. I call them ‘Exhibits’ – a collection that I can and will constantly be adding to.” The first in the series – Exhibit A – is an exploration of dynamics. Its eight songs are a mix of organic sounds and electronics. “With Exhibit A, I wanted to continue to push my songwriting in multiple directions, while keeping songs direct and concise,” says Rubin, “I always like to keep music moving in various directions and have the listener guessing for what’s next. Sonically, the material on ‘Exhibit A’ lent itself to both very organic sounds as well as quite a bit of electronics, which I’d say resulted in a pretty unique body of work.”
I think Rubin is very smart to release his music in this way. The traditional means of releasing singles and albums is no longer the norm now that the ability to self-release music digitally on one’s own terms is possible. As you can hear, The New Regime offers a different sound than NIN … but it does showcase Ilan Rubin‘s talent to tackle successfully a wide array of musical styles. I think folks who are familiar with Rubin‘s drumming prowess have been well aware for some time of his talent … but people may be quite surprised to hear this other side of this talent in the form of The New Regime. If you’d like to hear more, I highly suggest you pick up Exhibit A when it is released on May 7.
