Back in the Summer of 2011 it was first announced that the Showtime series Dexter, based on the novels by Jeff Lindsay, would be adapted into a comic book series for Marvel Comics. The book was due out in February but … it was never released. Today we learn that the Dexter comic book is still on track for release but, instead, it won’t be out until July … which times nicely with the release of the final season of the Dexter series on Showtime. HMMM. Click below to see the two covers for Dexter #1 and learn more about the much-delayed release of this new comic book series.
While the Emmy-winning Showtime counterpart of Dexter Morgan is preparing his last kill room, the literary version of the character lives on. Back in 2011, it was announced that creator Jeff Lindsay would be bringing his serial-killing blood spatter expert and his Dark Passenger to Marvel Comics, but things went quiet after the announcement and no release date was revealed. Then, about five months ago, the series based on the best-selling ‘Darkly Dreaming Dexter’ book series was scheduled to hit shelves in February of this year. Here we are in April and still no book. Well, after the long delay, it seems like we finally have a concrete confirmation of when we can get our hands on ‘Dexter’ #1. The first in this five-issue mini-series from writer Lindsay and artist Dalibor Talajic will be released this July after being delayed quite a bit. The series will be set within the continuity of the novels, so we won’t be seeing Michael C. Hall’s face plastered about, but it will visit a storyline that played out on the show. Similar to the season six episode titled ‘Those Kinds of Things’, Dexter will be attending his high school reunion in this mini-series. Meanwhile, he’ll also be dealing with the Skid Row Slasher, “a rookie serial killer hounding Miami’s finest”. Mike Del Mundo, who’s created covers for such titles as ‘Marvel Zombies’, ‘Avengers Arena’, and ‘X-Men: Legacy’, has contributed a cover for this new series.
• Dexter Morgan isn’t just Miami’s #1 forensic blood splatter expert…he’s also a serial killer who targets other serial killers!
• In this issue, Dexter faces his worst nightmare: his high school reunion!
• Plus, Dexter faces his other worst nightmare: a former classmate with a secret that could destroy him!
I’m excited that this Dexter comic book series is finally getting released but, man, I wish it was longer than just a 5 issue run. I’m hoping that Marvel will produce more issues of Dexter if this first run is a success. Now that Dexter is going off the air, it would be fun to have the comic book series to turn to in times of need. I love both the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book series as well as the Angel series. Both of those comic book series keep my lurve of the Buffyverse going strong. Maybe this Dexter comic book series will do the same.
