Back in July of 2011 we learned from director Steven Spielberg that plans were in the works for the production of Jurassic Park IV. Today we know that JP4 will hit theaters in June of next year but we are learning a bit of new info about the film. According to paleontologist Jack Horner, a “new” dinosaur will be introduced in Jurassic Park IV that will be a star of the film like the velociraptors were in the original Jurassic Park. At this point, we don’t know much about the upcoming sequel … but this new bit of info is exciting enough to keep me intrigued.
The original Jurassic Park did something you might not have realized: it introduced we the uneducated to the vicious creatures that were velociraptors. Growing up, most of us had our own dinosaur kick and knew the all-stars—tyrannosaurus rex, triceratops, brontosaurus, and so on—but it was JP that made us all aware of raptors and put the animal up there with the big boys. Now comes word that Jurassic Park IV, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters next June, will attempt to recreate that magic with the introduction of a new dinosaur. Paleontologist Jack Horner was a dinosaur adviser on the original movie, and will be a consultant on the new movie as well. He let it slip that a new dinosaur will be making its big screen debut, but couldn’t share any more than that: “I can’t actually tell you who that will be, but you’ll want to keep the lights on after you see this movie.”
Tho mildly entertaining, I can’t say that I really enjoyed the Jurassic Park sequels that came after the original film. Jurassic Park: The Lost World was just OK in my book … Jurassic Park III was slightly less entertaining than II was. I must admit, tho, that I am encouraged by this news that we’ll be introduced to a “new” dinosaur in the fourth installment. I’m hoping IV will be a reboot in the sense that they can start over from scratch and attempt to bring back some of the magic of the original film. And speaking of the original film, Jurassic Park opens in theaters today for the first time in 3D:
You may recall that it was just about a year ago that we learned that JP would be re-released in 3D and today is the day! I’m hoping to see the 3D version of JP this afternoon … mainly because it’s been 20 years since I last saw the film on the big screen :D Classic Jurassic Park this weekend, a brand NEW Jurassic Park next Summer … it all sounds dino-mite to me!!!
