As you may have noticed, I enjoyed more than my fair share of Morrissey last week but today I have one more thing I have to share with all y’all. It’s no secret that Moz tends to get into little squirmishes with folks over silly and not so silly things. As outspoken and opinionated as the Mozzer is, it’s only a matter of time before he gets into a new “feud” after his last “feud” has faded from memory. Last week, Morrissey got into a public spat with Jimmy Kimmel and this week, he’s butting heads with David Bowie … kinda. For the reissue of his single The Last of the International Playboys, Morrissey intended to use an old photo of himself with David Bowie … the only problem is that David asked that his photo not be used. Nonplussed, Moz went ahead and decided to grant Bowie‘s wish and use a different photo … choosing instead to feature Rick Astley on his single cover artwork. LOL! C’mon, that’s funny, right?
Bowie famously refused to be included in the art for a repress of Morrissey’s 1989 single, “The Last of the Famous International Playboys.” Morrissey wanted to use a previously unseen photo of Bowie on the April 8 re-issue (Paraphone is re-releasing “Kill Uncle,” the album that features “Playboys”), but news broke last month of Bowie’s disapproval of that idea. It seems Morrissey got creative: The singer has elected to use a photo of “Never Gonna Give You Up” singer Rick Astley instead, effectively “Rickrolling” Bowie.
LOL! I have to give a huge shout out to Pink reader Denise for giving me the heads up about the release of this single artwork. I knew about Bowie‘s reluctance to appear on the cover but I assumed that Morrissey would just go ahead and use the photo anyway. Choosing to use the Astley photo is just brilliant. Not only are all parties satisfied but it’s the funniest way to settle this silly disagreement. Plus, altho I love me some David Bowie … I also love me some Rick Astley (he is a GOD AMONG MEN, after all). I’ve never seen this photo of Morrissey and Rick so, yup, I’ll deffo be picking up this reissued single :D
