Last month we learned that Downton Abbey is looking to cast a new leading man for the upcoming 4th season to replace … well, someone. Even tho the season 3 finale of Downton Abbey aired weeks ago (here in the US, months ago in the UK and abroad), I’m hesitant to say too much just in case some of y’all still don’t know who was killed off on the show. SO, I’ll do my best not to spoil anything in this opening paragraph. I will tease, tho, that filming production has begun on Downton season 4 and in the photos below you can see the sad result of the shocking last scene of the season 3 finale ep. Additionally, another Downton Abbey castmember is leaving the show … you can find out which castmember will NOT be returning to Downton Abbey when the 4th season of the show returns later this year.
The cast of Downton Abbey kick off the fourth season of the hit television show in bleak form. The stars of the ITV period drama were seen filming scenes around the grave of dearly departed and popular character Matthew Crawley. Led by Dame Maggie Smith the characters appeared gloomy and upset at what appeared to be a memorial service for the deceased Crawley.
Seen on set on a cold Thursday morning the actors got the fourth season underway in the small village of Bampton, Oxfordshire. Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, played by Dame Maggie, looked particularly upset as she walked down the road dressed all in black. The new series moves six months on from the untimely death of Matthew Crawley, played by Dan Stevens, following the birth of his son and heir, from a motor accident.
OY! The death of Matthew will be tough to bear but if they can get a hot dude to replace him, I’m sure the tears will dry up quickly enough. As for news of the latest castmember to leave the show … it is my sad duty to share the news that Siobhan Finneran (the deliciously evil maid Sarah O’Brien) is leaving the show:
Siobhan Finneran, who played conniving—but sometimes likeable—maid Sarah O’Brien, will not be returning for season four, a rep for MASTERPIECE on PBS confirms to EW. Her departure follows the exits of Jessica Brown Findlay (Sybil) and Dan Stevens (Matthew), who both opted not to renew their contracts with the series. “I’m not doing any more. O’Brien is a thoroughly despicable human being – that was great to play,” Finneran told the Mirror. According to TV Line, the actresses departure will take place off-screen during the six-month time jump between seasons.
Boo. Even tho O’Brien is dastardly and not liked by almost everyone on the show … I’m sad to see her go. Her brand of bitchiness was fun to watch. I’m curious to see who will get her plumb maid position on the show so … we’ll have to stay tuned. So much Downton news today, I can’t wait for this new season to start!0
