Last night Darion talked me into going out to the movies and we decided together to see the movie Identity Thief. Despite all the bad reviews I heard about the film, I was encouraged by the fact that Thief debuted in the #1 spot at the box office. My hope was that the movie, which honestly looks pretty funny in the trailer, would offer some much-needed laughs in the theater. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Even tho Identity Thief is only about 90 minutes long, it really felt more like a 3 hour saga. While there were many opportunities for laughs, I really struggled to find any reason to LOL at all.

There are really a great many things wrong with this movie … from the writing to the execution to the character development to the humor … Identity Thief misfires on all fronts. The only time I genuinely laughed was when Melissa McCarthy‘s character punched Jason Bateman‘s character in the throat. I laughed out loud, boisterously and jovially. It was less funny the next 5 times it happened. And that was about it for laughs. I honestly have to lay the most blame on the writing. I guess McCarthy and Bateman did an ok job with the characters they were given but it’s hard to tell. The story just does not work. There are a bunch of extraneous characters that are meant to spice up the action but it all just felt messy and unnecessary. I really wanted to like this movie and I was hoping, at the very least, it might turn out to be a fun, mindless popcorn movie. Unfortunately, I spent most of my time praying for it to be over. The ending, if you can believe it, was so terribly bad that I had a hard time forgiving the other things I didn’t like about the movie. I felt if it, at least, had a funny ending I could find some redeeming quality … but nope. They don’t even offer a blooper reel over the credits! Hello, all these kinds of movies offer blooper reels. It’s rare that I walk away from a movie without anything good to say about it but it does happen. Save your money, wait for this one to come out on cable … you can hate it then for free.
Today is my homie Josh’s birthday so I’m waiting to see what we’re gonna do to celebrate. JZ is still recuperating from his collarbone injury so he’s not been in the best mood lately. I’m not sure if he’s gonna wanna get out and play today or not but maybe you can send him some birthday love anyway ;) Happy Tuesday!!

I saw it last night too. I wouldn’t have bashed it quite as much as you did, but it definitely wasn’t as funny as I was expecting. And the ending wasn’t funny, but it was cute. My sister works at the theater, so I get free movies. Otherwise, I would have been kinda mad to spend 10 dollars on it.
well this makes me sad. but i was only going to watch it for Melissa. guess i’ll just have to wait until its on tv..or bootleg it.
Aww. I saw it at a pre-screening with two friends and we all LOVED it! Granted, you probably have to be in the mood for this type of comedy, but I laughed SO very much. And I thought the ending was great! It was a relief to see the development in the characters after having sat through the whole sad story in the first place. I’m looking forward to seeing it again with more friends.
You are a fucking idiot. how are you going to bash the movie like that, it was funny and the acting was spot on. Maybe you are a boring bitch with no sense of humor.
Wow, that was harsh.
Are people not allowed to have their own opinions anymore?
@jdog6572 — LMAO!!! Thanks for the laugh, I actually needed one today :D
