Austin Butler Of ‘The Carrie Diaries’ Does ‘Bello’ Magazine

The CW prequel series The Carrie Diaries, which tells the tale of young Carrie Bradshaw before her grown-up Sex and the City days, has become my favorite new TV show of the new season so you can imagine my excitement when I learned that Carrie Diaries actor Austin Butler is featured in the new issue of Bello magazine. For all intents and purposes, Butler plays Sebastian KyddCarrie’s teenage “Mr. Big“, the main guy she is crazy in love with. Even tho the show has only aired 5 episodes, you can already see the complicated and, may I add, cute nature of Carrie’s relationship with Sebastian. Click below to see some of Austin’s photos from his Bello feature and read some excerpts from his accompanying interview.

On his familiarity with Sex and the City: I hadn’t watched it before I did the pilot. But I was in New York and I said to myself, “I should really [watch] this show.” And so I bought it on iTunes and I ended up watching two seasons in like a week or so … it’s such a good show. You relate to it even though these are 30-something year old single women living in New York.

On his role in Carrie’s young life: I look at it knowing that everything we’re doing now is shaping who she eventually becomes, the person we see in Sex and the City.

On the drama of The Carrie Diaries vs. the comedy of Sex and the City: I think its tone is a bit more dramatic than Sex and the City. Carrie just went through something very traumatic, so naturally we touch on some serious topics. But as the series goes on we’re incorporating comedy more and more, which you’ll see as the episodes air.

I love these photos, shot by photographer Karl Simone and I really enjoy Austin’s interview answers. I can’t say I know much about the guy except from his work on The Carrie Diaries but he sounds like a generally nice guy. I’ve been charmed immensely by The Carrie Diaries and I’m really rooting for the show’s success. SaTC purists who refuse to watch the show because of some of the storyline changes are, IMHO, missing the fun that can be had seeing what Carrie was like as a kid. I still watch reruns of SaTC almost every day (the show makes great background entertainment) and now I look at adult Carrie a bit differently now that I’m seeing what the character was like as a teen. The old SaTC eps now have new life with this new context. I like Austin Butler’s character on the show and, yes, it’s impossible not to see him as Lil’ Mr. Big but I think the show can grow beyond just being a teen version of SaTC (but hopefully not too much, most of the charm is the pubescent SaTCness of the characters). There is a lot of charm and a lot of wit in The Carrie Diaries, I think. I’m very much looking forward to seeing where the story goes … for as many seasons as The CW will give us :D

Any other Carrie Diaries fans out there? It’s so cute, right?

i love The Carrie Diaries. its such a great show, i dont mind any of the changes they made from SaTC.
and thanks to this show, i kind of have a crush on Austin, i find him to be so adorable.

    • @nicole — IMHO, the changes don’t change a thing for me. SaTC focused so little on Carrie’s past that the changes they made to her past (ie. her relationship with her father, the existence of a younger sister) have no effect whatsoever on the enjoyment of the adult series. I really love all the cute little nods TCD makes regarding SaTC. I really enjoy the writing a lot.

Austin Buter was on Nickelodeon for awhile within the last 10 years. He was in every episode of the show Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide but never had any lines. He was always one of the kids in the back of one of the classrooms. I think most tweens and teens know him from the final season of Zoey101. He played Zoey’s boyfriend James after Sean Flynn left the show. I’ve never seen “The Carrie Diaries” but he seems perfect for a show like this. I’m glad he’s finally made it.

I’m loving TCD too, even though I was certain I wouldnt. lol

    • @Deb Hodgon — :D

  • Brittany

He was on Switched at Birth last year as well. I miss him on that show but really enjoy him on TCD.

I have been DVR’ing TCD since it premiered, but just started to watch it yesterday (taking full advantage of leaving work early not feeling well)…I got through the first 3 episodes and am also charmed by it. I may have cried a little during each episode, too, but we’ll blame pregnancy hormones!!

    • @Nicole O’Brien — It’s just so cute, right? I really think it’s going to find its audience :D

I have fallen in love with the show! I am very impressed with how it is going so far! And I totally have the hots for Austin Butler.

  • Halli

I’m loving TCD…The story is cute and the 80sness is just great!

    • @Halli — The 80’s music and fashion is THE BEST. They pick such great music for each of the eps, I love everything about this show.
