Watch: Alicia Keys’s Rendition Of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ Made NFL Players Weep

The biggest thing that happened last night (other than, like, the actual football game… I guess) was the Super Bowl Half Time performance heard ’round the world. Earlier today we celebrated the awesomeness that was Beyonc√©, Kelly, and Michelle (but mainly Kelly) at Super Bowl XLVII, but I just watched Alicia Keys’s rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner… and yeah. Awkward. How good it was. I know people like to show off with this song, but I really appreciated that she sang it fairly simply, without a lot of fancy tricks, and pitches, and weave-flinging– not that I’m coming at anyone who’s done it like that… because I’m not! Anyway, I was sooo about to clown Ray Lewis ¬†and his fellow-Raven who were totally crying at the end of this video… but then I realized that I kinda was too. Whatever. Peep the video for more!

P.S. If the video gets removed you can watch it here.

If I could sing as effortlessly beautiful as her, I would sing all my daily conversations

I agree about singing it without any flourishes. I commented to my husband how nice it was that she didn’t need to add anything else to the song, but it was still amazing. He laughed at me at the end when she went a little off course, but it was still great.

Shannon, you read my mind. I was just talking with a friend about how annoying it is when singers take an important song like the Star Spangled Banner and turn it into their own personal vocal exercise. The song is bigger than you, and it’s refreshing to see AK remember that (unlike, ahem, another recent performance…)

The last bit wasn’t necessary, but she did a great job. Instead of the normal “going through the motions” to sing the song, Alicia seemed very heartfelt with each lyric, so it was definitely hard not to get teary-eyed. Great job Alicia!!

Ray Lewis cries every time the national anthem is sung. Teddy bear to the max.
