Kate Winslet In Talks To Join The Cast Of ‘Divergent’

Sigh. Kate Winslet. Where art thou?! Oh yeah, that’s right. Probably off enjoying your honeymoon with Ned Rocknroll. But it sounds like she’s getting ready to return to the big screen, and she’s taken interest in a movie that will surprise some of her fans. A little while back we learned that Shailene Woodley (of The Descendants and The Secret Life of the American Teenager) had been offered the lead in the movie adaptation of the young adult novel Divergent (she was also pegged for the role of Mary Jane in the next Amazing Spider-Man flick). It looks like Woodley might get to work with one of the best (and my absolute favorite actress of all time), if Kate Winslet does join the cast. Click inside to learn more!

Indiewire has the deets:

While she did star in in “Titanic,” which wound up becoming on of the biggest movies of all time, Kate Winslet has, before and since, stayed away from franchise territory. The closest she’s ever come to a tentpole was probably Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion,” or maybe the Aardman animation “Flushed Away,” but in general, she’s preferred to stick to artsier, more awards-baity fare, working with directors like Roman Polanski, Todd Haynes and Jason Reitman.

But it looks like she might have found something tempting, as Summit Entertainment reveals that Kate Winslethas joined “Divergent,” the studio’s adaptation of the best-selling young adult novel. With a script from “Snow White & The Huntsman” scribe Evan Daughtery, rewritten by Vanessa Taylor (“Game Of Thrones,” “Hope Springs,” winner of the 2012 most incongruous credits award), and Neil Burger (“The Illusionist,” “Limitless“) in the director’s chair, the studio are clearly hoping for the film to be the next “Twilight” or “Hunger Games,” and look to be landing as prestigious a name as has been involved with either series.

The plot is set in a dystopian future where people are divided in factions separated by their qualities — selflessness, intelligence, honesty, peacefulness and bravery — and focuses on a girl, Tris, who discovesr she’s a Divergent, caught between multiple traits. “The Descendants” and “The Spectacular Now” star Shailene Woodley is signed on to play the lead, while Jeremy Irvine, Lucas Till and Alex Pettyfer were testing for the male lead, but Variety says that the filmmakers have decided to go older for the role.

What isn’t clear is what role Winslet would play. Our quick glance at Wikipedia doesn’t suggest an older female character, other than Tris’ mother Natalie, but there’s no indication of how big a role that is.

So, has anyone read the book? It sounds interesting, and I’d love to know who you think Kate Winslet might play.

On the one hand, I wouldn’t necessarily expect her to take on a movie like this, but she’s surprised me before. I know she’s in Movie 43, which I can’t wait to see (because eeeeveryone is in it), and I was pleasantly surprised when she was in Contagion. Ultimately, I don’t really care what type of movie it is; if Kate signs up, I’m signing up too!

I read these books. I’ve been dying for the third one to come out! If they don’t make her Natalie, and I had to guess another character, I would say Kate will be cast as the character Jeanine, one of the leaders of the intelligence faction, Erudite. If the movie is successful I’m sure they will make the second and eventually third, where Jeanine becomes more important to the plot.

Emily, thanks for the inside track! I’m gonna have to check these out, esp now that the movies are coming.

Shannon – we seem to have a lot in common. Kate is also my favorite actress. She can do no wrong and it’s about time she gets back to work!

    • Shannon

Donny/Karlie’s boo! LOL, I can’t even count the number of times I’ve watched The Reader and Eternal Sunshine. It’s ridic. And I can’t wait to see what else she’s got for us :)

Books are great – if you liked Hunger Games you will like these. Flawed but strong lead characters – I powered through the first two and cannot wait for the third! I am assuming Kate will play Tris’ mother who is a very interesting character.

Stephany Cavatoni, ‘Flawed but strong lead characters’ I like! Thanks for recommending :)

I was thinking she would play Tris’ mother as well. She is too old for Natalie and doesn’t fit the role of Jeannie.

I love the books, thought they were better written than both HG and light years beyond Twilight (mind you most Dr. Suess books are light years beyond Twilight in terms of writing and character development). So far, Divergent has done a good job of balancing love interests with actual character development as well as some interesting political commentary. I am definitely looking forward to the third book!

I liked HG but found they didn’t develop the characters as much as they could have. Both the bf and I wished that series was written for adults, which would have helped tease out what was going on within each character rather than focus on the teeny-bopper love triangle.

    As for Twilight…. *face palm*

Amazing books cannot wait for the third!

Shannon – if you liked Hunger Games you’ll like these!

And as for Kate – heard about this last night and squeeeeed. She is my absolute fave and I am so excited about this!

Wonderful books! I think Kate would be a great Jeanine. Would love to see her in a more ‘villainous’ role.

As for Shailene Woodley as Tris- really?! Tris is supposed to be slight, short, and small. I consider that a huge part of the plot, and the fact that she’s strong despite her size is one of my favorite things!

Jeanine, for sure. I can’t see her as Natalie Prior for very obvious reasons having read the books.
