Movie Review: ‘Mama’

Last night I finally got to hang out with Darion after the poor guy finally recuperated enough from the deathly illness that kept him bed-ridden for the past week or so. We had planned on hanging out after I got back from Florida but, alas, his sickness kept him from being able to leave the house. BUT, at last, we were able to hang out and we decided to grab dinner and see a movie. Because D and I have a long history of seeing really schlocky horror films together, we simply had to made our way to the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood to see Mama … the #1 movie at the box office. Unfortch, the movie isn’t very good but Darion and I managed to have a great time anyway.

So, yeah … Mama … I was hoping that it would be good but unfortch it wasn’t very … at all. The amazingly visionary director Guillermo Del Toro produced the film so I had kinda high hopes that the movie would turn out decent. The fact that Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister from Game of Thrones) star in the film also gave me reason to hope for the best. Unfortch, what we got was the worst. There are some scary moments but they’re of the jump out of the dark variety, nothing at all interesting or clever. The story is weak, the writing is pretty weak … but the acting performances were pretty decent. Again, as I said, because Darion and I love to see terrible movies like this we had a blast … those of you actually hoping to see a good horror film will likely be very disappointed. But, if you’re up for a cheesy popcorn movie, this one might fit the bill but … yeah, do not expect to really be scared by Mama.

Today, in a few hours, I fly back home to Detroit for the rest of the week. I’m going home for my Dad’s birthday on Friday but I also have some other fun things on the schedule. Sarah and I are seeing Morrissey in concert tomorrow night and then I think there will be some dancing at my fave City Club this weekend. I understand Detroit is COOOOOOOOLD right now so I’m not looking forward to that but … ah well, I’ll make due :)

Happy Wednesday, y’all! I’ll be comin’atcha from the Motor City for the rest of the week :D

We saw it too- it sucked! My husband said it’s like the ring without the VCR.

I saw it too. I am a huge lover of all things Guillermo but this just was not him. I knew going in it was based on a short from a fan and I am still trying to figure out what he saw in it. Thumbs down!
