Why Is This Unpublished Princess Diana Photo Being Called ‘Salacious’?

The Photo Is Headed To Auction

Now this is interesting. Any posthumous anythings concerning Princess Diana are sure to be a big deal, but a picture that’s just started to surface is getting a lot of attention for reasons that aren’t entirely clear. A photo of a young pre-Royal Diana on a Swiss ski retreat is getting ready to go up for auction. But the photo has been described as a ‘salacious teenage image’ of the former Princess of Wales, and I’m trying to figure out why. Click inside to see the full picture.

Princess Di On Holiday:

E! has the story:

Last year was the year of scandalous photos of the Royals coming to light. And just days into 2013, could the trend continue, now that a “salacious” photo of Princess Didecreed “not to be published” has surfaced?

Not exactly, because the picture isn’t very salacious at all. In fact, the photo—of a teenage Diana on a Swiss ski retreat, lying in bed while an unknown male friend reads nearby—is rather pretty and a rare glimpse into the life of a woman not yet a princess.

The history of the picture proves more interesting than the actual photo itself.

The Daily Mail acquired it on Feb. 26, 1981, just days after Prince Charles announced his engagement and Diana moved from her flat into Buckingham Palace. Years later, it was sold to The Caren Archives; the only reason we’re seeing it now is because it’s set to go up for auction (beginning Jan. 17 by New Hampshire-based RR Auction).

It’s being marketed as a “salacious teenage image of the future princess.”

“This would certainly not be the way the Royal Family would have wanted Diana to be presented at that moment,” Eric Caren, owner of the Caren Archive, told the Daily Mail. “Given that two days before her engagement had been announced.”

Now I’m not one of those people who knows a ton about Princess Di, and I don’t tend to obsess over British Royalty… but I love this photo. On the one hand, it’s totally innocent and absolutely not salacious. Which is what makes it so lovely.

But then again… there’s something else about it. When you look at the guy reading on her back– c’mon! That’s kind of hot! Like, if this were a scene in a movie (don’t make me bring up The Reader, lol) it’d be sweet. And someone on E! mentioned the bottle of Johnny Walker on the windowsill; you could see how people might make a big deal of it.

I think the bottom line is that it’s a never before-seen pic and– even if she was alone in it and, like, gardening , it’d be a big deal. She was and is an icon and anything pertaining to her legacy will be heralded as an iconic object of sorts.

The folks over at E! were excited, they said, to see a Royal looking so ‘normal.’ What do you guys think? Is this an image of Princess Diana that people need to see?

I think it was called “salacious” because she’s with another boy and there’s clearly alcohol in the shot. This didn’t go with the impression that the Royal family wanted to give of the future Queen Consort. These days such a photo wouldn’t be a big deal as the Royals have since learned that it’s better to let family members choose their spouse instead of strong-arm them into a marriage they don’t want because the chosen spouse presents an ideal public image.

It’s salacious because she was getting engaged to Prince Charles but was photographed in the lap of another guy!

Proof positive that her image was formed & peddled by the media. They knew that if they published this when they got it, she could never have married him – & all due to a fantasy they were trying to push in the first place: the fairytale pure princess. It’s what kept Charles from marrying Camilla in the first place – as well as scuttled a romance with Davina Sheffield, because her former boyfriend blabbed about her in the papers. G-d only knows how many lives were ruined in total because of their machinations.
