Reports Indicate That Whitney Houston Died By Drowning In A Bathtub
Prescription Drugs Were Found in Her Hotel Room

The world is still reeling from the incredibly sad news of Whitney Houston‘s passing yesterday afternoon at the age of 48 but there is a LOT of new information to pass along in order to update the tragic story. According to new reports from TMZ, it’s starting to look like Whitney passed away by drowning in her hotel bathtub at the Beverly Hills Hilton. Apparently, Whitney has been taking the prescription drug Xanax to treat anxiety and depression and it appears that she may have taken the drug and fallen asleep in the bath while she prepared for the big Clive Davis Grammy Party that took place last night. According to the report, Whitney was found in the tub underwater. Wow … just … so sad.

No illegal drugs have been found in the hotel room where Whitney Houston died … but prescription drugs were present, and it’s possible the singer drowned in the bathtub … TMZ has learned. Sources tell us … when EMTs arrived Whitney’s body was already removed from the bathtub … Informed sources tell us … Beverly Hills cops — who were still searching the room at the time this story was posted — found various pill bottles. There was no evidence that Whitney was drinking alcohol in the room. Whitney’s body was just removed from the room on a gurney. It will go to the morgue for an autopsy to determine cause of death.

Whitney Houston was found in the bathtub of a Beverly Hills hotel yesterday … with her face underwater … people close to Whitney tell TMZ. According to our sources, her stylist, hairdresser and two bodyguards were among the people in the room at the time. We’re told they became worried about Whitney because she had been in the bathroom for over an hour and it was time to start getting ready for the Clive Davis party. Our sources say they began to knock on the door and there was no answer. We’re told the hairdresser, who is female, went in to check on Whitney. She immediately screamed and, according to our sources, one of the bodyguards came running in and pulled her out of the tub. We’re told Whitney’s face was below the water and her legs were uplike she had slid down the back of the tub. According to our sources, her body was very cold and the bodyguard attempted CPR. That’s when hotel security was called. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter, but Whitney was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM.

Whitney Houston was taking Xanax … evidence she may have fallen asleep in the bathtub where she died … TMZ has learned. Family members of Whitney tell us the singer had a prescription for the drug, which is commonly used to treat anxiety and depression. We told you yesterday … the night before Whitney died, she had been drinking a lot. Xanax mixed with alcohol can cause severe sedation, which could cause someone to fall asleep in a bathtub.

Of course all of this information provided by TMZ has NOT been confirmed as true by officials but, as they tend to do, they have managed to procure a lot of details from the scene that appear to add up. As I read all of these details together, it really does sound plausible that Whitney took a Xanax in order to relax before she took to the stage last night for Clive Davis‘s party — an event she attends every single year — and just fell asleep (or passed out) in the bathtub and tragically drowned. I just can’t … the thought of walking into the bathroom to find Whitney underwater is horrifying to me. I understand Whitney‘s daughter Bobbi Kristina tried to enter the hotel room where her mother died but she was turned away by police authorities:

Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina got into an angry shouting match with police officers outside the hotel room where her mother was found dead … TMZ has learned. According to law enforcement sources … Bobbi Kristina showed up on the 4th floor of the Beverly Hilton several hours after Whitney’s death. We’re told when officers informed her no one was allowed to see the body — BK screamed, cursed and demanded to see her mother. Ultimately, she was not allowed into the room and left. We’re told Whitney’s cousin Dionne Warwick also showed up later. She too was turned away by officers. As we reported earlier … other family members and friends — who were in the room when authorities arrived — identified Whitney’s body.

That poor, poor girl … I’m utterly heartbroken for her. Everything about this sad end to Whitney‘s life is just rife with tragedy and sadness. An impromptu memorial has sprung up outside the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel where Whitney died yesterday and the famed Apollo Theater in New York has already erected a tribute to the late singer:

I am not ashamed at all to say that I was pretty wrecked last night. After I learned of Whitney‘s passing, I was in a state of shock and disbelief. Even as I wrote my post yesterday, my brain was not fully processing that Whitney Houston had died. As the next hours passed, the realization really started to set in. I spent a good few hours listening to Whitney‘s amazing catalog of music and just sat there and cried. When the rendition of The Star Spangled Banner that she performed in 1991 at the Super Bowl came on, I literally burst out in a fit of crying … the fact that Whitney could turn our national anthem into a hit song during a time of war in this country just really struck me as proof of her insane talent. Old skool Whitney music, new skool Whitney music … I listened to as much of it as possible last night and just … mourned the end of her life. I suspect quite a few of you may have done the same last night … I suspect even more of you actually shed a tear or two for our dear Whitney. She will never be replaced … never. I will be very, very sad over her death for a very long time. I never had the pleasure of meeting her personally but I have been blessed with the opportunity to see her perform over the years and we have all been blessed with a catalog of songs that will not only live for all time but will stand as an eternal testament that we truly had in our midst one of the greatest singers not only of our time but possibly of all time.

I truly hope Whitney Houston is now enjoying the eternal peace that she greatly deserves.

It is like the “Everytime” video replicated in tragic real life.

  2. anonymous says:

Xanax is a benzo and is used to treat anxiety. Teamed w/ EtOH it leads to respiratory depression and is deadly. So sad :(

  3. Nathan says:

How the heck do you end up face DOWN in a bathtub if you’ve simply fallen asleep (with or without the use of a drug). This happens in pools because there is room to float and such, but in a bathtub?!

    • Veronica says:

It only takes a couple of inches of water to drown.

    • josie says:

the TMZ article never states she was face down. This blog misquoted the site. The TMZ article says “Whitney’s face was below the water and her legs were up … like she had slid down the back of the tub.”. So to me that reads she was on her back, lying down in the tub, and when she fell asleep, slid underwater, all still on her back.

Well, bathtubs in a hotel like that are often large and rounded. It’s possible that she passed out, drowned and her body floated any which way.

This actually hits really hard for me, personally. I was shocked and saddened to hear of her passing yesterday, but reading this report is something else. I struggle with depression and take different prescriptions to manage it, Xanax being one of them. Since I was young, when I’m feeling really down, I take a bath and rest my eyes to calm down, my parents and now boyfriend hate this because they are scared of an accidental drowning. The fact that Whitney Houston may have died doing something so simple that I and possible others do quite often, is incredibly tragic.

I hope she is at peace and her daughter is able to cope in as healthy a way as possible.

I made my son sit and watch some live performances of hers with me..He’s a 15 year-old boy, who isn’t really her target audience, but he was blown away by her voice..We both commented that there are maybe less than a handful of singers nowadays who can sound that great and powerful live without the help of a backing track or autotune crap..She was just so special and will be remembered as a true legend..It’s all so sad..

Dear Trent, what you wrote is so beautiful and so beautifully written that I finally let myself burst into tears.

I’m not going to lie a shed a tear or two it’s pretty sad. She had such a natural born talent that many singers to this day cannot come close to. I love her rendition of the National Anthem and I remember watching her sing that and her performance gave me goosebumps. She was amazing :O(

  8. Karen says:

It is horribly sad. I feel so awful for her daughter, her mother, Dionne, Clive, and everyone else close to her.

She was preparing herself to go out, to be around people who admire her and support her, and some who truly loved her.

I wish there were more public attention to the real dangers of prescription drugs; it is not only celebrities who die from improper use of them.

Her voice was unreal. There is a handful of amazing singers out there, ones who stand above the rest, but her voice was something else entirely.

Even if others can hit the notes and sing with feeling, her voice had a quality that no one else’s has. When I hear other people with truly beautiful voices sing her songs, the miracle of her voice becomes all the more apparent.

I take Xanax. I know how careful I have to be where and when I take it. I usually even make sure my roommates know I’ve taken one. I can completely see someone getting this relaxed and having it happen. What a terrible situation. I really feel for her daughter.

  10. PixiesBassline says:

I would think she’d have to take more than one Xanax to cause this sort of thing. One Xanax pill, even with a night of drinking beforehand, should not have caused a person to fall so deeply asleep that they drown. Unless she took what is known as a “xan-bar”, which is a much higher dose than what *most* people get prescribed.
Also, if a person takes Xanax regularly, it loses some of its sleepiness effects. (Becuase of tolerance)
Maybe she was still drinking at the time, on top of having taken more than the prescribed dose of her Xanax? And maybe had even had a lack of sleep the night before, so was more tired than usual.
I’m not trying to trash talk her at all, BTW. I just had to point out some of those possibilities.

    • PixiesBassline says:

It’s just that I know a lot of people who take more than the prescribed dose of their Xanax… But I also know people who don’t take it very often and it still does have a sleepiness effect on them. And then, there’s also the possibility that she hadn’t been taking the drug for very long.

      • PixiesBassline says:

Oh, wait, wait… I just saw on another site that there was also Ativan and Valium found in her room. So if she had that sort of a cocktail in her system, this drowning in the tub thing would make more sense.

  11. Isabelle says:

Aouch…Ativan is a strong son of a b****…and acts really, really fast.
What I can stop thinking about is, you really have to be far gone to not being able to wake up once your head is underwater. That I don’t understand.

  12. Sanchez says:

    Sheesh…

  13. AmandaMarie says:

For me. This is how my Xanax works. I take 2.5 milligrams a day. Which is slightly above average. Most people only take about a gram daily. I also use a special dose of Xanax (3 mg) to combat my extremely intense (usually hospitalization is required) panic attacks. I have a slight tolerance built but it’s not increased for three years. A few times I’ve forgotten to record doses that I’ve taken and taken two doses essentially back to back. I feel it. Feel it intensely. I can’t imagine how strong it would be mixed with alcohol, Valium, or worst of those Ativan. I’d imagine it would put me squarely into a medically induced coma for around 24-36 hours, seeing as if I take my higher dose I sleep for 12-15. My heart goes out to her and her family… It really does.

  14. AmandaMarie says:

Correction. I take 5 milligrams a day. 2.5 twice daily.

  15. Barbie says:

That’s bull shit… Think about it you can’t hold your breathe without the urge to breathe because your body/brain will not are you to. So don’t you think that if your in the tub n you fall asleep and your body submerges under water and you began to inhale water your body won’t trigger you off to awake. Come on now be realistic
