Lana Del Rey, the new singer on the block who suffered a disastrous national television debut on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago before she released her debut album Born to Die last week, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of British Vogue magazine. In her cover story interview, Lana (née Elizabeth Grant) talks music, explains her love of singing and reveals how she chose her new stage name. She’s quickly becoming a household name thanks to the popularity of her worldwide hit single “Video Games,” andLana Del Rey now finds herself covering the March 2012 issue of British Vogue magazine. The 25-year-old New York City native’s front page was shot by famed photographer Mario Testino while clad in a broderie anglaise blouse and collar by Louis Vuitton. Set to hit newsstands on February 6th, highlights from Lana’s candid interview are as follows:
On Christopher Kane and Emilio de la Morena choosing her music to accompany their spring/summer 2012 shows:
“I had no idea about the fashion shows. But I think they chose Video Games because it embodies summertime sadness. Fashion is inspired by youth and nostalgia and draws inspiration from the best of the past. I think both the song and the collections touch on the light and the dark side of life.”On her rise to musical stardom being almost accidental:
“I was always singing, but didn’t plan on pursuing it seriously. When I got to New York City when I was 18, I started playing in clubs in Brooklyn – I have good friends and devoted fans on the underground scene, but we were playing for each other at that point – and that was it.”On choosing her stage name:
“I wanted a name I could shape the music towards. I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba – Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue.”

You know … I like Lana … for the most part. Yes, the trying-too-hard/obviously manufactured image is a bit off-putting but I enjoy listening to her music. I really like Born to Die a lot more than I thought I would. I’ve read many of the negative reviews of her album and I really think most of them are based on a hatred of her that has nothing to do with her talent. I think in the long run, she will be fine. As I’ve said before, I’m really curious to see her perform live so … hopefully, I’ll get to catch one of her shows soon. She looks really lovely in this Vogue feature. I think I’d like to see more from Ms. Lana Del Rey.

Watch the beginning of that video, even she admits she’s not great live. Personally, I love her live, I love her image, her music, I think she’s amazing :)
I saw Born to Die the other day, and her voice reminded me of that movie SpaceBalls, where the Princess sings “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen”. Not my thing at all. The hype machine around her makes it worse. Her tortured mouth is just horrifying.
I enjoy her music :)
she is so so so boring…and her music puts me to sleep….zzzzzzzzzzz
She was on letterman a few days back and wasn’t good then either. She’s super pretty. She should just be a model.
It’s ridiculously funny to see people hate on her for NO reason at all… All these people hating on her, especially the critics, remind me of high school behavior. It doesn’t make any sense. My jaw dropped when I read that Rolling Stone gave “Born to Die” a fucking 2 out of 5 stars. Are you kidding me? Another critic gave the album ZERO stars. She really does not deserve to get this unfair backlash when she really hasn’t done anything wrong, except her SNL performance, but so many other artists get away with so much more, yet she gets slaughtered for not being perfect. People who hate on her looks are obviously jealous, and that’s the truth. She isn’t ugly and her lips may look odd, bu they work for her. I don’t think she’s boring; just because she’s not showing her vagina or jumping around the stage/humping it does not mean she’s boring. This is true and raw talent. Everyone needs to grab a pen, sit back, and takes notes and leave their jealousy at the door. Kthanx, etc.
Agreed 100%!!!
Shes fuckin awesome, I love her music and shes gorgeous to boot. She reminds me of Britney so much in the way she polarises opinion and I agree Trent the reviews are biased cos they just attack her character without listening to the music :/ prefer her over Gaga anyday
I do really love her voice/music, and I even like her live performance, but she BUGS me. Not solely based on the forced image thing, just the way she talks, trying to sound so solemn and artsy. And the fact that her lips are fake also annoyed me. I know it’s petty, but it’s just a vibe I get.
she hasn’t had a drink in seven years? dude. so when she was 18 was the last time? i don’t THINK SO
It’s totally believable. I know people who have never had a drink in their life. Not everyone caves in to peer pressure or has to resort to alcohol to have a good time. Everyone has their preferences.
she really is talented and I absolutely hate that everyone is getting stuck on her SNL performance while she’s done so many other amazing live performances.
her album is absolutely brilliant and she seems like a genuinely sweet girl – I don’t find she’s over fabricated at all, all the styling and music seems to agree a 100% with her personality. I can see why some people would find her annoying as she does have a lot of gimmicks (but then so does Mariah Carey)
and OMFG, “trying too hard” ??? excuse me but what kind of a stupid argument is that ?? Who doesn’t try hard to break in this business ?? I’ll tell you who tried too f*cking hard last year, Lady Gaga.
Will marry me rite nao
haha – I’m single at the mo, could do !
