Last night, ABC News aired the first portion of their interview with Madonna on their late night news program Nightline (which you can watch in full below) and tho interesting, for the most part, there wasn’t much juicy stuff to nosh on. Madonna briefly talked about her upcoming Super Bowl performance and she dutifully talked about her new film W.E. (which opens in theaters early next month) but all of the GOOD STUFF was saved for today. Madonna was asked the much-anticipated Lady Gaga question on Good Morning America earlier today … and you’ve GOT to see what she has to say about the wannabe popstar by checking out the video and interview quotes below.
Nearly a year after Lady Gaga released her hit single “Born This Way,” Madonna is finally offering her take on the song … and it’s not exactly enthusiastic. Gaga has long expressed her admiration for Madonna, calling the pop icon an inspiration. Comparisons between the two divas have been inevitable, from their dance-hall beats to their risque musical treatment of sex and religion. The two even teamed up for a “catfight” skit on “Saturday Night Live” in 2010. But last February’s release of “Born This Way” had many questioning whether the Mama Monster had gone too far in emulating her idol. The song, critics charged, was stunningly similar to Madonna’s 1989 chart-topper, “Express Yourself.” Gaga would go on to say that she got an e-mail from Madonna’s “people” saying they supported the song, but a representative for Madonna later said she was unaware of any such e-mail. When ABC News asked viewers to contribute questions for Cynthia McFadden’s interview with Madonna, the most popular request by far was that McFadden find out how the singer feels about Gaga. McFadden did, starting with the question of whether Madonna felt Gaga was “copying” her. The pop singer’s response, at first, was complimentary. She called Gaga “a very talented artist” and said she admired her songwriting. But she owned up to the connection between Gaga’s music and her own. “I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done,” she said. Madonna said sometimes Gaga’s work also appears to be a “statement about taking something that was in the Zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it.” “There’s a lot of ways to look at it. I can’t really be annoyed by it …because, obviously, I’ve influenced her.” But the Material Girl became coy when the conversation turned to “Born This Way.” “When I heard it on the radio …I said that sounds very familiar,” Madonna said. Asked if that felt annoying, Madonna responded, “It felt reductive.” Pressed as to whether that was a good or bad thing, Madonna told Cynthia McFadden to “look it up” – we did; the term means “minimal” or “crude” – before smiling slyly and taking a sip from her tea cup.
LMAO!! Perfect answer is PERFECT! I think pretty much everyone with ears can hear that Gaga‘s Born This Way is an homage (nicely put) or a rip-off (not nicely put) of Madonna‘s song Express Yourself — depending on your perspective. But, there is no denying that you can clearly hear the influence of Madonna‘s original song on Gaga‘s newer song. Calling Born This Way “reductive” is EXACTLY right. Let’s just hope that Gaga owns a dictionary because she might accidentally take “reductive” as a compliment ;) I’d say Madonna‘s comment is spot on … would you?
As for the ABC News interviews that have aired thus far, here is the full video of the Nightline portion of the interview that aired last night:
And here is the full video of the Good Morning America portion of the interview (which features some of the Nightline footage) that aired earlier today:
The third and final portion of the interview will air on 20/20 on ABC later tonight (which, I understand, will feature more Gaga talk). I am LIVING for this new Madonna interview … and I’m dying to find out what other nuggets of wisdom she has to impart as the interview continues :)

You don’t have to be a trained musician to hear that the two songs sound almost identical. And I think Madonna was speaking about what Born This Way was saying as being reductive. Taking the sentiment of Express Yourself and rewording it, which is really what she’s done, is in fact reductive. Madonna preached this sentiment years ago, Gaga is just bringing it back. At it’s core there is nothing truly original about Born This Way.
Madonna is a bully, and it’s sad to see so many people defend her because “she’s the Queen of Pop”. Oh, she’s allowed to piss on other people because she’s Madonna? NO ONE deserves to be treated poorly. And before anyone starts ranting about how she’s just being honest, she has a long reputation of being honestly RUDE and ego-maniacal. A fan is one human being reaching out to another in a loving way and should never be met with snide or diminutive remarks. I know from personal experience that Madonna can be a mega-bitch to her fans, as I had the chance to meet her and was over the moon. She was so rude that I threw her CD and autograph in the trash before I got out of the building. My husband tried to go back for it thinking we could sell it, but I wouldn’t let him. She CRUSHED me. I’m not Taylor Swift so I refused to profit off such heartbreak, though in my more rational mind I would have weighed that option a little more heavily. Madonna, I say it’s time to get off that high horse and join in with those of us who are trying to change ourselves to be mindful of our words and attitudes, respect others, and spread positive vibes instead of catty or derogatory ones! If we are trying to create a world where everyone is equal, we can’t tell our children, “No one is better than you, except Madonna. No one should treat you poorly, unless it’s Madonna. No one but Madonna should ever diminish your hard work and dreams”. She just won a Golden Globe, so she should stop focusing on BS Gaga fodder from a year ago and try to get back to number one! She hasn’t been there since 2000! I used to love her more than any other artist, but her attitude stinks and no one should have to stand for it. I know Gaga is overexposed but at least she focuses on inspiration and motivation in the face of adversity. Why not say “Hey, you want to be like me? I love that because I wanted to be like someone else, too!” Madonna is a total perpetrator of degrading rhetoric and hypocrisy, as she wore her influences like a badge. And I’m sure if you picked through her songs, you could probably find AT LEAST one that was reminiscent of a song that came out before it. We’re getting to an age where everything has been done and it’s really hard to be original without trying. I know that her remarks about Gaga may just be her stating an opinion, she needs to stop thinking about herself so much and start thinking about how her words affect people! We can’t pick and choose who gets to indulge in total narcissism, it’s acceptable for everyone or no one. Gaga is (or maybe was at this point) a fan of hers, so why not say, “I’m really happy that I can still influence number one hits”? Lord knows she hasn’t written one in long enough! Sigh. Now that I’ve said all of this, I’ll be hiding in a closet for the next three days to avoid the wrath of the Madonna fans.
“Madonna is a bully.”
?!?!?
and then LOLOLOLOL
I read nothing further. Too ridiculous for any serious consideration.
I think Madge is saying Gaga is not pushing the envelope and that she is only simplifying it…aka be original next time round bitch.
I don’t take it as being BITCHY either. I have seen M be much more bitchy!!! Love the interview!
I love Lady Gaga and of course I’v always loved Madonna’s music, Lady Gaga just puts a new excilerating up to date twist on her music! They are both great artists and to preform together someday I know everyone is waiting for!
