Memory Lane: ‘Sweet Valley High’ The Musical?
Back To The 80s With Jessica And Elizabeth

OMG I was sooo obsessed with Sweet Valley High throughout my school years… I read all the books when I was maybe 10 or 11 (like ALL of them!) and then got into the TV series when that came out. I hadn’t thought of SVH for years until I saw this news… MTV spoke to Diablo Cody about the Sweet Valley High movie, and there is talk of it being a musical… soo cool!!

I am seriously soo excited because this brings back so many memories for me of being 10 yeas old and going to buy the paperback books from different book stores because I would always get through them faster than the number I had. The funny part is that the stores didn’t keep them out on the shelves, they would be in boxes, covered with dust, tucked away somewhere, and I remember sitting on the floor pulling them out so excited to find ones I hadn’t read before.. ahh…

For those of you not familiar with the Francine Pascal book series, it began in 1983 and ended about 20 years later. The story centered around the lives of teenagers Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, two very blonde Californian twins who live in Sweet Valley, hence the name…it was all trials and tribulations with boys, gossip, school and friends… think Gossip Girl circa 1989.

The idea of a Sweet Valley High movie is too much… Diablo hinted that it will have “lots of 80′s awesomeness” and that original music is currently being written for it by Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway writers. There isn’t any concrete stuff yet, no casting or production to speak of… but there was the mention of it being a musical. Nothing was confirmed but she did seem to be quite serious, Ms Cody. Wow, it is worrying me just how excited about this I am.

To get you excited (or for those shameful few who aren’t familiar with the series) have a listen to the opening credit to the TV series.. the memories will all come flooding back.

I loved Sweet Valley High too! I remembering reading about this in Entertainment Weekly a LONG time ago (well minus the part about it being a musical) and it surprises me that not much more has begun. I love SVH and I’m sure Cody will do a quality job, but I cannot imagine what this reincarnation will be…

Haha!! Oh man, if it’s true I will so be there :)

I think she is the PERFECT person to do this, it will be snarky and sarcastic and witty and just the right amount of camp. I’m so IN!!

I also read the books like some crazy addict. Speaking of addicts, the girl that died from an overdose the first time she tried drugs(Regina maybe?) is SERIOUSLY the main reason I’ve never even tried drugs. That and in 7th grade someone dared me to snort a pixie stix and that ish BURNED!!

In conclusion, I’m making my kids snort pixie stix and read that book so theycan be drug free toooooo!!!

It was Regina, but she only did it cause Bruce Patman, the love of her life, was like, leaving her for that witchy Amy Sutton and she didn’t know how to cope! It was peer pressure, y’all!

@Stacey: i feel like we just metaphorically shared a BFF necklace. For reals though.

I loved watching Sweet Valley but was a little freaked out by the drugged out sexpots Brittany and Cynthia Daniel’s played in Basketball Diaries and it was all over from there.
