‘Little Earthquakes’ By Tori Amos Turns 20 Years Old Today
"Years Go By"

Today is a very special day for music fans as it is the 20th anniversary of the releas of Tori Amos‘s solo debut album Little Earthquakes. Altho the album was released here in the US in February of 1992, it was released first on January 13, 1992 — 20 (!!!) years (!!!) ago today! Fans of Amos hold Little Earthquakes in such high regard that I simply couldn’t let the day pass without paying a bit of homage to the 20th anniversary of its release … and as I type these words right now, I am listening to the Little Earthquakes album in full. Click below to read what the amazing Tori Amos fansite Undented has to say about the 20th anniversary of Little Earthquakes.

Twenty years ago today, Little Earthquakes, Tori’s debut solo album, was released in the United Kingdom. (It would be another month until the record was available in North America.) For more than a few Toriphiles, these songs were the ones that introduced us to Tori, whether we were lucky enough to hear then them or it was some time afterwards that the record came into our lives. Whether because of the lyrical, emotional or musical components — or some combination thereof — this record enchanted us then and continues to do so today and the songs from it always seem to produce the biggest cheers at her shows. As she’s mentioned in several interviews over the past few months, Tori will be observing the anniversary of Little Earthquakes with a collection of her songs recorded with The Metropole Orkest. The career retrospective will revisit songs from throughout her career. At this time, the exact release date is not known but the rumor mill seems to point to it being available in Autumn. (The rumor mill also grinds about the possibility of some tour dates but we’ll have to see how that pans out!) So, if you have a chance, pull Little Earthquakes out today and give her a spin. It’s a safe bete you’ll both enjoy it!

Wow … 20 years … I can hardly believe it. Now, I consider myself a really big Tori Amos fan but — I’m sad to say — not from the beginning. I didn’t get into Tori Amos until her sophomore album Under the Pink was released in 1994. Because Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails provided guest vocals on the song Past the Mission, I decided to give this Tori Amos person a listen. Again I’m sad to say that I wasn’t an immediate fan either … it wasn’t until I was able to see Tori live in concert and meet her after the show that I really started to listen and pay attention. I always say that Under the Pink is my favorite album but that’s mainly because it was my first introduction to her beautiful music. But Little Earthquakes is absolutely one of my all-time favorite albums … EVER. Every single song was crafted with love and a mastery of verse and melody. Tori Amos really tapped into something that resonates with so many people with Little Earthquakes. The confessional nature of many of the songs speak for a great many of Tori‘s fans. It’s not uncommon to see people crying their eyes out when Tori performs any one of the songs from Little Earthquakes in concert. There are very few albums that touch people like Little Earthquakes does. Anytime someone asks me what I would suggest they listen to in order to “get into” Tori Amos, I immediately suggest they listen to Little Earthquakes. The album, I feel, not only informs the listener as to what kind of woman/artist/human being Tori Amos is but I believe it will also inform the listener of something new about themselves they either never acknowledged or were too afraid to see.

If you own this album, I urge you to give it a listen today. If you have never heard it or are unfamiliar with Tori Amos‘s work, I highly suggest you get this album (immediately) and take a listen. I think you’ll thank me for the suggestion.

Happy 20th, Little Earthquakes!

Winter was one of the first songs I heard of Tori. I was 11 years old when we had to write down the lyrics of happy phantom in music class. While we wrote them down, my teacher played winter from the same album. Afterwards we had to sing happy phantom, but I couldn’t cause I never finished the lyrics haha. I was so blown away by her words/melodies/emotions that I wasn’t able to copy the lyrics! I failed that exercise big time but I gained Tori, so I don’t think I’ve lost at all :D

It was my first Tori album! Albeit I discovered it in 2006 but in my defence I was only 7 when it came out haha but damn my mother for not buying it for me back then haha

This album came out at the perfect time in my life. I’m listening to it right now with my girlfriend in celebration and it is just as powerful as ever. I feel old, though. ha.

the first tori album I bought was choirgirl I think but little earthquakes was played by my cousin a lot when I was a kid. I ended following her career a lot more in depth as I grew older to encompass every album and bside I could get my hands on. little earthquakes is a landmark event in music and changed the game. she showed how you could rock out with a piano. precious things will always be one of my favorite songs of all time!

    Happy Tori-versary, Little Earthquakes!
Lucky for me, I heard it right when it was released. And fell hard, fast and deep in love with Tori right then and there. And that love continues today.
She came here to Vancouver on that tour and tickets were only EIGHT dollars. Me and my friend Kim made plans to go. Night of the show, Kim phoned me and bailed. So I didn’t go because I was too shy or self-conscious or God knows what to attend the concert by myself. So I never went. I missed the fucking Little Earthquakes tour!!! Seriously, that is one of my life’s larger regrets :)

I’m a little older than most of Tori’s fans (in fact, I’m older than Tori, too!) but no less rabid LOL. I’ve seen her in concert (only) 5 times and have yet to meet her. next time I’m doing the meet ‘n’ greet come hell or high water! Anyway, in 1992 I was starting a business and didn’t have the time for any new music. I always have liked “complicated” rock, Zappa, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd. In 1996, I turned on VH1 one evening, and there was this GODDESS, on the show Storytellers. I was instantly mesmerized. She was a musical GENIUS, I was instantly hooked and bought all of her albums, but most especially Boys for Pele because she was playing a lot of songs from taht on Storytellers since the album had just been released. I became a rabid fan and have not stopped since. I have over 800 Tori songs on my iTunes, many of them bootlegs of live shows. Seeing her live is like no other concert experience I’ve ever had. Yummmm. Congrats to Tori on L.E.’s 20th anniversary. She’s my definition of a superstar.

I was 12 in 1992 when I started listening to her. I was a HUGE fan as a teenager, I knew every song, went to every concert, had every bootleg I could get my hands on. She’s a great artist. “Nevermind” and now this? Wow, I feel old. I would go back in time if I could, becuase those days were actually really great.

I feel so lucky because at a dinner party in Los Angeles (we lived there for a short time) a friend gave my LE the second week it was out…so I got into Tori real fast. At my first Tori show she played everything on LE plus the songs on the EP except China. She sort of sat there for a moment as if trying to collect her thoughts and said “I feel like I am forgetting something” and the whole audience (in loud unison) yelled “CHINA!!!!” all at once. She said “I knew you would know” and played China so beautifully. Over the years, Little Earthquakes has slipped to about my number 5 favorite Tori album but I still take the old girl out for a spin. Tori and I are nearly the same age, so I was thrilled that someone a little older then a Miley Cyrus (OK… she wasn’t even born yet…but I can’t remember who was untalented 20 years ago) was given the opportunity to make such amazing music…so I sort of feel like I grew into adulthood with Tori (any one as old as Tori knows that you aren’t all the way grown into adulthood until …um…. oh, I don’t know… I still don’t feel all the way there).

All I got to say is that I have a cat named Easter and a cat named Tash. Tori will ALWAYS be my favorite and I ADORE Night of Hunters!!!! Can’t stop listening to it. She just gets better and better!

@Melinda — Thank you for your comment. Sigh. So jealous that you have been with Tori for so long. I wish I had seen her live back in the early days. Sigh.
