Last year we reported that there was talk of a 3rd Sex and the City movie or a new TV series, now we know that it’s official – there will be a SATC prequel (as in the opposite of a sequel) hitting our screens sometime soon. We don’t know dates yet, and the big question remains…who will be in it?

Rumors have been circulating for a little while now, but NY Magazine has confirmed that The Carrie Diaries, a TV series based on Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell’s book about Carrie’s high school years is definitely happening now. The deal has not been finalized and there is no talk of who is going to play Carrie, but we do know that the project will involve Gossip Girl executive producers Josh Schwartz and former SATC writer/producer Amy Harris, who is writing for Gossip Girl this season. (side note: OMG that show just gets better and better)
The Carrie Diaries is a young-adult novel that chronicles Carrie’s senior year of high school in a small New England town. Because of its young skew, it was never considered for HBO, which adapted Bushnell’s anthology book Sex and the City into the hugely popular comedy series created by Darren Star and starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
But Warner Bros. TV, which bought the rights to The Carrie Diaries book from Bushnell, reached out to its corporate sibling HBO. During the series’ 6-year run, Bushnell’s characters evolved and their lives took numerous turns. WBTV’s rights deal with HBO, which is now being nailed down, will allow the writers of a The Carrie Diaries series to incorporate characters, traits and developments introduced on the Sex and the City series along with the core source material, Bushnell’s book. As for Star and Parker, neither of them is attached to the new project, at least not for now.

OMG, I am so excited that some version of SATC will be back on the screens some time soon, maybe even as soon as 2012? I, like the rest of the world, was a HUGE Sex fan and was heartbroken when the show ended. I put a lot of hope into the movies and sadly wasn’t really satisfied. I hope that this new show is more successful that the 2nd movie which just did not live up to my expectations at all. I have a good feeling though. I’m also super excited that it is going to have some element of one of my other fave shows, Gossip Girl. Could it just be that I am obsessed with TV series that are set in NYC where Manhattan becomes a character in its own right? Still, I am excited to see how different The Carrie Diaries is from GG, given that it is the same writer I worry that it will become a typecast… but, it may end up being pretty different as Carrie grew up in a small New England town, where teens are vastly different from those on the Upper East Side, right?

I’ll check it out but as a SATC fan, Carrie Bradshaw will always be SJP. I just hope we see a third movie soon because I liked the other two.
No no no SJP is carrie! Another sex and the city series is what I want.
I’m a huge SATC fan, but I don’t think “The Carrie Diaries” book or this show is neccessary.
Worst idea ever! Seeing second rate actors trying to be characters I love will be just woeful! This is one huge SATC fan who won’t be tuning in
Me either! The whole idea of SatC is being ruined. I really didn’t see the need for any of the movies, but didn’t mind the first one. The second? Not good.
The Carrie Diaries book was really well done…hope they don’t screw the movie up.
Honestly, I would be more excited about it if Josh Schwartz wasn’t involved. It will just be a Gossip Girl/The OC redux. I would love it if Darren Starr was somehow involved but I just can’t see it being CWed.
we want a new movie with the original characters already!!!
I heard that Miley Cyrus was attached to play Carrie granted that was back when the rumors started flowing around but I personally would LOVE that lol
Are you joking? She is a horrible actress, and looks like a muppet.
The Carrie Diaries are really good so I think the movie could be great! I just hope they don’t throw in too many references to the original series because it would be nice it it could stand on it’s own.
This is such a bad idea. Hollywood really is running out of ideas.
Just PLEASE bring back SATC!! The actors arent doing anything else besides butter commercials!! There are so many stories left to tell. The movies were horrible. As a dedicated SATC fan, who has seen all the shows WAY too many times, the movies just sold out. There is no way Carrie wouldve married Big after what he pulled, bailing at the alter. And the rest of the girls hated Big throughout the entire series, they nurse her back after he jilted her, and then they are at the justice of the peace after they get married and they are all THRILLED??? Come on now!! A little reality PLEASE! Stick with the storyline!! I loved Carrie and Big together over the years, but they would never have wound up married. The 1st movie was amazing and completely in tune with the series till the LAST SCENE at the apartment with Big. You had me till then…
The second movie was just a hot mess I wont get into. Everyone here in Ny wants to see those 4 beloved NY women fly to the middle east post 9/11… It just got worse from there…
I really like the Carrie Diaries but I can’t see the first book being a good basis for a movie or a show. Summer in The City was AMAZING and can see many great things coming from it.
No way!!!!!!!!!! SJP is Carrie!!! No one can play that character.
