Earlier this year, Frank Ocean revealed to GQ magazine that he wrote a song intended for the Django Unchained soundtrack but when the album was released, Frank‘s song was not included. Instead, Frank posted last night the song titled Wise Man on his official Tumblr site with the caption “Django was ill without it“. Click above to hear the song in full then click below to read the lyrics, as shared by Frank himself. You can also read below the statement issued by Django director Quentin Tarantino as to why Wise Man was cut from the soundtrack.
“Frank Ocean wrote a fantastic ballad that was truly lovely and poetic in every way, there just wasn’t a scene for it. I could have thrown it in quickly just to have it, but that’s not why he wrote it and not his intention. So I didn’t want to cheapen his effort. But, the song is fantastic, and when Frank decides to unleash it on the public, they’ll realize it then.” — Quentin Tarantino
Yes, this song is definitely fantastic … it’s a shame that it didn’t fit in the film and it’s a real shame that it’s being released in this way but at least we get to hear the track. Before the age of Tumblr, unreleased songs like this would largely go unheard. Yes, many songs find their way online but now that artists have the ability share whatever they like directly with their fans on minimal, personal websites like this we are privy to hearing much more unreleased stuff than ever before. I’m glad that Frank Ocean likes to share … it makes receiving Xmas gifts like this a little sweeter.
