On Wednesday we got to see the poster artwork for the forthcoming final season of Spartacus on Starz but today we learn that the drama of ancient Rome may not be coming to an end with the finale of Spartacus: War of the Damned. It turns out that the powers that be are considering a spin-off series set in the same time period but centered around the not-yet Roman emperor Julius Caesar. Nothing has been decided yet and I suspect that this spin-off series will depend on well War of the Damned does but … I think this is a great idea.
While Starz‘s drama Spartacus is heading into its final chapter with the upcoming Season 3, Spartacus: War Of The Damned, Starz may not be ready to close the book on the successful franchise. I’ve learned that there is talk about a potential Spartacus spinoff series centered on Roman leader Gaius Julius Caesar. The spinoff idea, which is in the nascent stages, is being shepherded by Spartacus executive producer Robert Tapert … Caesar is being introduced on the upcoming third and final season of Spartacus, which premieres January 25. The character, played by Australian actor Todd Lasance, is adding star power and a formidable new nemesis for the famous gladiator despite the fact there is no hard evidence that Caesar actually was involved in the campaign to put down the Spartacus-led slave rebellion, as he is on the show. Spartacus: War Of The Damned could serve as a nice starting-off point for a spinoff as it features a young Caesar who is yet to begin his ascent toward ruling the Roman state.
See, I don’t usually like period piece shows. It’s for that reason that I didn’t get into Spartacus right away. But I love Spartacus on Starz and I was bummed to learn that the show was ending. I hope this Caesar series does see the light of day. I’d love to see a show centered on the young life of Julius Caesar before he became emperor. I’m all for this, someone make it happen!
