Staying Occupied

The TV Guide

For the past few days I’ve been pretty much doing everything that I can to keep myself occupied … because too much thinking isn’t really fun for me right now. On Monday, totally on accident, I ended up indulging a bit of retail therapy. I’ve been mulling over buying an iPad of my own but since David had one, I would just play with his whenever I wanted. I guess the time is right for me to get my own. I’ve been playing with it ever since I got it and am amazed I went this long without getting one. Needless to say, a new toy goes a long way in keep myself distracted … which really helps these days.

When the first iPad was released a few years ago, I bought one. After about 2 days of playing with it, I decided it wasn’t for me. I’m not sure why exactly but I think my main complaint was the lack of apps for the device. Now that the iPad is in its 4th generation (with an amazing retina screen), there are plenty of apps to make the tablet well worth owning. The first thing I did was load The New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly and New York magazine onto my new iPad. These are my favorite magazines, the ones that I read from cover to cover … tho, in recent months, I’ve fallen out of the habit of reading my fave mags because I hate carrying them around with me. Honestly, the ability to read my magazines on the iPad was the main reason I bought the device. I’ll take my tablet with me when I fly home to Detroit next week for Thanksgiving so, yeah, I’m excited … and believe me, anything that can get me to smile these days is very welcome right now. OH and if you iPadders out there have suggestions for must own apps, please let me know!!

I have some unpleasant stuff to take care of this afternoon so I’m really not looking forward to that (personal stuff having to do with my separation from David) but I am looking forward to hanging out with my good friend Gillian tonight. I’ve not really been in the mood to hang out with anyone lately but I’ve missed Gillian and her adorable baby Gemma for months now and, well, I think seeing them both will cheer me up a bit.

It’s Friday, I hope you all have an amazing weekend. If y’all are doing anything fun and cool, lemme know … it does make me happy to know that other folks are having fun these days.

I don’t know if you’re into iPad games, but they have a free one called ‘Temple Run’ that’s really fun and addicting. Happy Thanksgiving!

    Big Hugs!

  2. Anna

I’ve been reading your blog for so many years now, Trent, that I truly do feel as if you are a close friend- even though we’ve never met. I always found you to be an upbeat, fun loving, intelligent and heartfelt person and I, probably like your other long time readers, feel your pain. We’re all rooting for you and sending good vibes your way. You deserve to have someone that appreciates and respects and adores you unconditionally.
Stay positive- if I’ve learned anything from reading your TV Guides throughout these years, it’s that you always seem to land on your feet and things work out the way they are supposed to. All the best! xoxo

Long time reader and I agree with Anna 100%!!
All positive vibes your way Trent!

Ditto what Anna said. I really feel for what you’re going through, Trent, just as I would if you were a friend I’d actually met. :) You’re doing all the right things — trying to stay occupied, treating yourself well, spending time with good people who love you — but I know it’s still really painful in all the moments in between. It’s a massive adjustment not just to your present but to your vision of your future. Grieving absolutely sucks, but there’s no way around it, and you’ll come out the other side better for having experienced it honestly. Sending you a big hug…unless you t find it creepy to get a hug from someone you’ve never met! In that case, I’m sending you an awkward pat on the shoulder. :)

Ditto. Long time reader here, and a big fan. Love and light being sent your way, Trent!

  3. I’m with Anna. I’ve been reading for so long so I am feeling for you. Hang in there. One day soon, it will stop hurting. I promise. In the meantime, know that we’re all behind you, wishing you the best. Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. It will get better, Trent. Just takes time. I know it sucks now, but it will pass. Glad to hear of your new purchase! I love mine! Use it for everything.

  5. Lulu

    Big huge hugs Trent!!

  6. This weekend I’ll be watching a ton of soccer and baking pies with my son..Woooo! Don’t be jealous of the fun we’ll have! ;) Good luck today, Trent..Know that you have a lot of people behind you, in person and in thoughts.. :)

    • Oh..And I’m poor so I have no suggestions for ipad fun since I don’t own one..I’ve been hearing people freaking out over the Star Wars Angry Birds game though, if that helps..

  7. Kstewa

Hang in there, Trent. I recommend Plants v Zombies, Sword and Sworcery and Bastion for the iPad games. I’m also just read Divergent and working on the Mortal Instruments book series on the iPad right now. Plus, Project Gutenberg let’s you download free ebooks too.

  8. DFS

Trent, breakups are never fun especially with the amount of years having been together. With that said time will heal and I do hope things get better for you…

    You need a Pinterest!

Going for a nice long run along the Chicago lakefront tomorrow since the weather will be nice (54 degrees IS nice coughsocalweatherisbettercough), Then probably negate that all by ordering a pizza and having a bunch of wine while I watch season 1 of Friday Night Lights. Because Taylor Kitsch is shirtless a lot in it. You are welcome everybody.

IMDB has a great app; you can also get . I use Flixster for movie theatre times. There is a yellow pages app and a qwerty app, as well as apps for skype and pinterest.

I use the app myfitnesspal to keep track of my calories (and exercise)

Songza is a neat app that lets you select songs related to the mood you are in.

Action Movie app lets you do some fun things to your photographs….

Appshopper app lets you search for fun or related apps.

One of my favorite games is a find it game called Garden’s of Time. It’s sort of like FarmVille but better. It won the award for best social networking game of the year last year. You build a garden and do find it scenes based on a really cool storyline about time travel. Im glad you finally bought one. I had the first generation and now the 3rd and they keep getting better and better IMO.

  13. Janet

Trent enjoy your evening with the ladies!!! Babies always have a way of making you smile :-). I’ll be at Circuit of the Americas in Austin (my home) for the next two days. Opening weekend for the brand new track…WOOOTTT!!!

Hang in there big guy…there are so many people sending positive vibes and lots of love your way! Including me :-). In the words of my bestie Joe: “X TO THE O!!!”

  14. Lexie

Hugs for Trent! Keep yourself entertained and occupied. Don’t spend too much time by yourself. xo

  15. Yay Trent! Try out Triple Town. It took me a while to get used to, but after that it was the biggest time killer. It ruined me for about 3 solids weeks!

  16. Christine

Firstly, I just caught up and I’m so sorry. I just had a 12 year relationship end within the last year and I PROMISE it does get better

  17. Julie

I’ve also been following PITNB for years, I’m sorry for the break up…but there is a reason for everything, he was a chapter and an experience in your life. Now on to other things!!! Take care, we love you! xox

  18. MM

HBO GO is a lifesaver when I’m stuck at an airport or something. So many choices for old shows to watch! Netflix and Hulu Plus are great too. Not much into the hip games but I love Hangman! :)

Glad you’re finding ways to stay occupied. Sending love and hugs your way!

    xoxo

  19. Amanda

Trent – good luck this afternoon. You are awesome and I think you know how loved you are! The first app I looked for when I got my iPad was one for PITNB!!! (not that I get to use my iPad very much since my kids discovered Minecraft. Sigh)

  20. Raquel

My latest iPad game obsession is “The Room” – its a series of puzzles that can keep you occupied for hours! Awesome graphics and creepy music make it even better! I also have Pacman which I can also play for hours :)

    Much love from Texas

  21. Jill

I love the Kindle app so if I don’t want to carry both my iPad and Kindle, I just need my iPad and I have access to my books – from the most recent point it was read to as well. Netflix, Pandora, and Yelp are essentials. Magic Puzzles and Flow are two games I’m addicted to! SongPop is pretty fun too. Pretty much anything you have and use on your iPhone is nice to have on the iPad as well.

Hope that helps and keeps you occupied! :)
