A ‘Boy Meets World’ Follow-Up Series Is In The Works At Disney Channel

Nineties Nostalgia Can Be A Dangerous Thing

Just the other day we heard amazing news about the possibility of one of my favorite shows coming to theatres. PITNBRS Randal, Joan, Adriana, and Jennie all joined me in celebrating the “return” of HBO‘s series Bored To Death, and now we’re getting news about another one of my fave shows making a comeback. Except… I don’t know that I should be as excited about this one. Boy Meets World, the re-runs of which I still occasionally watch, may be coming back to television via a follow-up series on the Disney channel. The show would center on the daughter of beloved 90s TV couple Cory and Topanga. Sooo… Girl Meets World? I dunno y’all. But we have deets inside!

The Hollywood Reporter has the story:

Disney Channel is in early stages of development on a new original television series centered on the daughter of golden couple Cory and Topanga, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Boy Meets World, the half-hour comedy that ran as part of ABC’s “TGIF” block for seven seasons from 1993-2000, centered on the lessons learned by Cory Matthews as he goes through life starting as a young boy. By the time the series ended, Cory and Topanga married and began living together.

Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong were among the main cast members on the show, which aired 158 total episodes during its run.

Casting is under way on the project from Boy Meets World executive producer Michael Jacobs. There is no official word on whether Savage or Fishel, who portrayed Cory and Topanga, respectively, would return to reprise their roles should the follow-up make it to the pilot or series stage.

Honestly? I don’t know what to do with this information: laugh, cry, rejoice??? I don’t know! On the one hand, if Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel aren’t down with it (and Mr. Feeny!) then I just don’t see what I’m supposed to be excited about. However, if they do come back, it’ll never be like it was! Because we’re not in the 90s, lol! Still, I suppose it’s a good sign that the executive producer of the original series is involved in the new project. What do you guys think? I friggen love Topanga, but who is this mysterious daughter of Topanga and how do I know if I should love her?! I’m in a glass case of emotion, y’all.

P.S. Who’s been watching Mr. Feeny/William Daniels on Grey’s Anatomy? I saw him for like two seconds, as I was gearing up to watch Scandal and I was like damn! I really need to get up on this show!

  1. Personally, I think this is a clever idea. It’s more like a sequel … it’s cute! I’m all for it :)

I’m honestly not that excited about it. I LOVE Boy Meets World, in fact it is a prereq for anyone I become friends with or date that they must at least like the show (along with Justin Timberlake) and as someone who was a 90s kid, I want them to leave well enough alone. Maybe a reunion but not a whole show. This isn’t Degrassi!(shout out to Drake/Jimmy), we don’t need to see the kids become parents.

From what I’ve read the timeline is off. The daughter would be a preteen, meaning around 11 or 12. Which means Copanga would have had to be expecting when the series ended, which they were not. Also, I don’t know if I want to see them as parents with responsibilities, the fun of the show was watching them goof off, and Shawn date as many girls as possible, (he should have ended up with Angela). I’m going to try and hold out full judgement til it is confirmed and we know who will be back.

also yes ,Shannon you DO need to catch up with Grey’s. Feeny is awesome and his and Yang’s working relationship is hilarious.

    • Whit… I’ve never ever watched the show. I’ve caught a few episodes here and there and now I see a few minutes pre-Scandal. But one day I swear I’m just gonna go on Netflix, live there, and watch every episode ever. Lol.

    • @Whit — But this new show is geared toward younger viewers, like our kids. This show may not be something that fans of the original show would love but I think it could be great for the kids.

    • Mmhh, Trent you might be right. This show just might not be for us old fogies, lol. If I can keep that in mind, maybe I can enjoy it too :)

  3. im not a big on the idea. yes it could turn out to be good, or it could be a horrible disaster. i say, i just air Boy Meets World reruns.

  4. MJ

Shannon, my glass case is parked next to yours! Why can’t kids today have their own thing? Why must the continue to eff with our childhoods? Listen, I freaking LOVE Boy Meets World, but if you can’t have Cory and Topanga as part of the show, then don’t do it not even as a stunt. (*side eye* to you, new 90210!) Because they might mean for this show to be for “our kids” (when did we get so old? lol) but by using Boy Meets World characters, they’re looking to drag us in…

…and for all my ranting, I’ll probably check it out. After all, I watch Melissa and Joey. It’s cute! And while they don’t play Clarissa and Joey Russo, it’s a bit like a modern Who’s The Boss? (Man, our childhood had good shows. Still, stealing is not cool, kids.)

PS. YES to Mr. Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeney on Grey’s. I might yell that (in my head…most of the time) whenever he’s on screen.

  5. I can’t even pretend to not be excited about this!! Boy Meets World is still one of my favorite shows and I can’t help but get excited about a sequel to it. Especially if it will introduce a new generation to the show. As long as Mr. Feeny, Eric and Shawn are able to make some guest appearances!! Feeeeeee-he-he-heeny!

  6. Also, I remember hearing about Ben Savage leaving a cryptic tweet about a Boy Meets World reunion a whole back. Maybe this is what he was talking about?

I’m on the fence. I agree with you MJ- some people have messed up the legacy of some 90s classics and I’d hate to see BMW go in that direction.

  8. Joanna

If this new version of the show is going to be produced in the same way that all of the other live action Disney shows are these days then this show won’t last more than a couple of episodes if that. BMW was one of my favorite shows growing up and I lived for it each Friday night. It was the right mix of comedy and seriousness (ranging from the hilarious Magnum P.I. frat Eric and Jack made up, and the time Shawn cross dressed to experience the dating world from a woman’s point of view, to the way more serious topics of physical abuse, alcoholism, and death). I just don’t know how a “next generation” type show based on such iconic 90′s characters could do well. I’m sure most of the current Disney viewing audience weren’t even alive when the show originally aired or were way too young at the time to appreciate it the way those who grew up on it do. I think it’s a world of no all the way round, but I’m not against either a reunion movie, or a peek into the future movie, but not a full fledged series based on Corey and Topanga’s child.

  9. cutitout

I’m all in. They need to do it exactly like they did in the 90′s though. It was good clean fun and I think there is a hole in the market for it. I’m over all these “teen” shows full of 25 year olds and alleged 10 year old girls walking around in full drag makeup.

  10. Sharry

omg I lovelovelove Boy meets world and it’s so exciting that someone is doing this – hopefully they do it justice!! But yes, won’t be the same!

  11. hapacalgirl

this will only work if they do get Daniel Fischer and Ben Savage involved. If its a whole new cast without any of the originals it won’t work. Plus think of all the old school cameo potential.

  12. They need some of the old cast members. Maybe Minkus can have a kid in the show too.

  13. Monica

*Please* let Rider Strong be involved in this somehow… :)
