First Listen: Kendrick Lamar Samples Janet Jackson And Features Drake On ‘Poetic Justice’

Peep Why Kendrick Won 'Lyricist Of The Year'
Poetic Justice, Put It In A Song...

So, I’ve slowly but surely been falling in lurve with Kendrick Lamar. Lady Gaga is such a big fan of the Compton rapper, people thought they were dating for a little while. Luckily, it was just a rumor so I can continue to fantasize uninterrupted, lol. I heart Kendrick (who rightfully won the BET Hip Hop Award for Lyricist of the Year– beating out Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Nas)! And I love this new song, Poetic Justice which features a verse from recent high school graduate Drake and the perfect sample from Janet Jackson‘s Anytime, Anyplace (I think we can assume Kendrick‘s song’s title is a shouts-out to Janet‘s 1993 movie of the same name). The song has a totally sexy, totally mellow feel (the Chopped & Screwed helps… so does Janet), and then it gets really Compton in the last few seconds. So yeah. My kinda track :)

Kendrick Lamar‘s highly-anticipated debut album  good kid, m.A.A.d city hits stores tomorrow, October 22.

  1. I am really digging this track!! Thanks for posting it. I got to see Kendrick Lamar last year at music festival, here in Seattle, purely by accident and within 10 minutes of watching him I was looking him up on Google. I’ve been listening to him since then. He’s such a great artist and I’m so glad that he’s been getting the recognition.

    • Evelyn Maldonado-Subaran, thanks for commenting. I suspect he gives a good live show– so cool that you got to see him in concert! I’m a new fan, but I love what I’ve heard from him so far so I’m happy to share the new music. Glad you liked!

  2. Shannon, have you heard his song ‘crying wolf’ with ZZ Ward?! I am really digger it and them!
