Shailene Woodley Will Be The New Mary Jane In ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Movies

Back To The Big Screen
2012 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals

Rising star Shailene Woodley (from The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Descendants) is about to come back to the big screen in a big way. She’s just been confirmed to play the role of Mary Jane Watson in the sequel to this past summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man. But what does that mean for our beloved Emma Stone, who took on the role of Gwen Stacy??? Click inside for more!

Complex has the story:

Looks like those previously reported negotiations for Shailene Woodley to take on the coveted role of Mary Jane Watson in the sequel to Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man went well: The A.V. Club is reporting that Woodley has officially been offered the role of Mary Jane for the second and third installments of the film franchise.

Woodley’s role in the second film will reportedly be only a “very small part,” but it leaves the door open for her become “an integral lead” in the third film. This, spoiler alert, makes it likely that the films will follow the classic Gwen Stacy-death arc from the comics, meaning the second film may very well be Emma Stone‘s last. Is it really a spoiler alert if the spoiler has been around for nearly 40 years?

Woodley has also been offered a role to star in a film adaptation of the young adult novels Divergent, so it’s probably safe to say she’s going to be a pretty busy girl from here on out.

So it sounds like we shouldn’t get too comfortable with Emma Stone being all up in this series, although it seems like we also haven’t heard the last of her.

What do you guys think of the casting news? I’ve only seen a few episodes of The Secret Life… but I absolutely loved Shailene in Descendants. I think she’d make a great leading lady, and if the movies are playing closely to the original comic book storyline, then I think a lot of fans will be happy.

Who’s ready for more Spider-Man? Sadly– and crazily– I have yet to see the first of the new series, but Trent gave the film a strong review so I def need to check it out; it sounds like they’re getting ready to head into production for this sequel pretty soon!

  1. If she gets on board with both Spiderman and Divergent, she’ll be setting herself to be an IT girl. Divergent has a HUGE fan base.

  2. Danielle

Gahhhh I want her for Divergent so bad.

  3. I very seldom root for reimaginings, but I loved Emma Stone’s Gwen so much that I would totally go for a reimagined series where she gets to live happily ever after with Spidey.
