Last night the Detroit Tigers defeated the NY Yankees by a score of 8-1 in a clean sweep of the 2012 American League Championship Series, clearing the way for the team to go straight to the World Series Championship. My BFF Sarah (who is the BIGGEST Tigers fan alive) and I were able to watch the Tigers cream the Yankees in person last night. Because of the rain delay, the game that was supposed to be played on Wednesday night was pushed back to last night … giving me an opportunity to see the game in person. I’m not a big sports fan but last night’s win felt pretty fantastic to me.

I’m not even exaggerating, every time I looked up I watched another baseball sail out of the park as homerun after homerun was hit by the Tigers last night. Baseball, IMHO, is not a fun game to watch on TV but in person, it’s the most electrically charged experience (especially when your team is winning). For me, tho, the best part of last night’s win was the look on 42,000+ people’s faces as we herded out of the stadium and into the streets of Detroit. Detroit, all y’all may be well aware, has many problems. To see the city filled with so many happy and hopeful faces last night really struck me hard. I love this city so much, it pains me to see how bad things have gotten … and if it takes a winning sports team to brighten up the city and bring people back to Detroit, then I’m all for it. Go Tigers, thank you so much!
The last time the Tigers won the World Series was back in 1984, I’m ready to party like it’s 1984 again :D
Today, I’m heading back downtown to pick up my race bib for the Detroit International Half Marathon this Sunday. I’m getting excited for my run, I have to say. I’m seeing my parents later tonight and then maybe a movie with Mark. Low key, gotta rest up. It’s the weekend again, folks, have a happy and safe one! Happy Friday!!

i was so happy for the tigers last night, partly because im a yankees hater & the other part because i picked them to go all the way. but they had an amazing series. even if they dont win the WS the team should be proud. they played great – and made the yankees & a-rod look like clowns.
My brother was watching and as a Yankees fanatic, he was pissed. However, I kept saying “OHHH There goes another home run. Trent must be having a blast!”
Brother – “Who’s Trent?”
Me – “Oh someone awesome…”
I am a huge Yankee fan, but I’ve got to give it to the Tigers- they played a pretty fantastic series. The best team won. :) But we’ll be back next year!!!
As a former Michigander who was transplanted to Florida about 23 years ago (yes I’m showing my age lol) I have NEVER seen a state of people that have more pride in where they live, where they came from, their teams or ANYTHING Michigan related. It breaks my heart to see what the state, especially Detroit has become, but even having spent most of my life in Florida I was born in Lansing, Michigan and I am, always have been, and always will be DAMN PROUD OF IT!!!!!
I can’t bring myself to root for a division rival (I am a life-long fan of another AL Central team). However, I will concede that if the Tigers do win the World Series, it would be a huge morale booster for Detroit. Let’s face it: the Lions aren’t doing too well, the Pistons suck, and it’s not bloody likely that the Red Wings will hit the ice anytime soon. So baseball is really the only spark of optimism in the Motor City.
