Back in January we learned that actor Elijah Wood, the star of the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, would be reprising his role as Frodo Baggins in the forthcoming prequel film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. As you may know, The Hobbit isn’t really a prequel since the novel predates the LOTR trilogy of books but for our intents and purposes, we can refer to it as a film prequel. The events in The Hobbit take place before the events of the LOTR story so it’s unlikely that Wood’s appearance in the film will be anything more than a cameo. Today we get to see a few new promo photos from An Unexpected Journey, one that gives us our first look at Elijah as Frodo in The Hobbit.
A batch of new images from Peter Jackson’s upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has landed online, giving us our first look at Elijah Wood reprising his role as Frodo. We previously saw Wood in costume in one of the earlier Hobbit production videos that Jackson shared from the set, but this is our first look at the actor in character in the film. The appearance is likely a brief one, as we saw Ian Holm reprising his Bilbo role in the first trailer. He began recounting his adventures that comprise The Hobbit as part of what looks to be a frame story, so it’s safe to assume that Frodo is part of this “Storytime with Bilbo.” The images also feature Ian McKellan as Gandalf and Martin Freeman as our hero, Young Bilbo … The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in 3D on December 14th, followed by The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on December 13th, 2013 and The Hobbit: There and Back Again July 18th, 2014.
I mean, yeah, there is no way Peter Jackson would disappoint the fanboys by NOT including Elijah as Frodo in The Hobbit. Even if it’s a cameo appearance, I fully expect the audience to break out in applause when Frodo appears on screen when the first midnight screenings take place in December. While I enjoyed the LOTR films, I’m not a crazy, diehard fan (I much prefer the books but the films are very good). That being said, yeah, I’m gonna be there to watch all 3 of the forthcoming Hobbit films. Are any of y’all excited to see Elijah back in his Hobbit gear? Any big LOTR fans out there super excited about these new films?
