It was such a bummer to hear that the release of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby had been delayed. Originally, we were expecting the adaptation to hit theatres around Christmas time, but now it looks like we’ll be waiting ’til May, 2013. Still, I don’t mind a little more anticipation. And we’ve got plenty o’ movies to keep us busy in the meantime, as Django Unchained, Anna Karenina, and Les Misérables are all dropping this winter. Plus we’re getting some good news about The Great Gatsby’s soundtrack, for which Lady Gaga and Prince both may be writing new material. Nuts! Click inside for more!
Indiewire has the report:
Speaking with Adelaide Clemens during press rounds for “Silent Hill 3D: Revelation,” she took a moment to discuss her role as Catherine in the Fitzgerald adaptation, revealing that “The Great Gatsby” may be getting some heavy-duty firepower added to its soundtrack. “They have some new music that’s going to be added to the film,” Clemens said. “Some pretty huge artists have approached Baz and are writing songs for the film, and I don’t think Warner Bros. are going to turn down Prince and Lady Gaga knocking down your door.” She confirmed she was referring to the Prince and the Lady Gaga, demurring, “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say that.”
…Clemens also made sure to tease further, ending her comments with “to name a few,” suggesting perhaps many more popular artists would be providing the film with a pop-music soundscape.

This whole Great Gatsby movement sounds so awesome to me; I seriously cannot wait. I know adaptations can be very, very tricky but I loved the trailer for this one. And I love the way Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Australia) pays homage to an original storyline but also digresses from it in major ways. Sometimes, I think that’s the best way to do an adaptation, because in a way it acknowledges the fact that some stories simply cannot be re-made. So you might as well offer your creative translation, rather than try to stay married to the original. Nobody’s ever gonna tell Gatsby like F. Scott Fitzgerald (“She smelled of money“… ahhh), but it doesn’t mean a new interpretation won’t be fun. And I’m expecting fun from the movie, and hopefully the story will move the literature-lovers as well.
Mainly, I’m dying to hear this new Prince song! Somehow, his inclusion makes perfect sense. As does Gaga’s… could totally see her doing a crazy Gatsby-inspired video. What do y’all think of these two contributing to the soundtrack… and/or collaborating?!0
